The Now-Irrelevant 2024/25 Relegation Battle (Without Everton!)

It is actually mad to think how easily moyes would of picked up say 10 more points over the season

But saying that think i said last season dyche wouldnt have us in a relegation battle this year so what do i no

The thing about relegation battles is that it's not always a 'standard progression.' Sometimes teams have an upturn in form and string together a sequence of results comparable to those at the top end of the table. Otherwise we wouldn't have had all those miraculous escapes of yesteryear (West Ham in the Tevez era springs to mind). If one of those below us do that (usually as a change of manager) they are capable of staying up. Having said that, i don't think we are in any real danger of relegation. Another 6 points will see us safe and, even if Dyche were still here, he could get that out of 13 games.

I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that Southampton lose at Everton on the penultimate weekend. I know we shouldn’t need to look out for the results of those down the bottom anymore, but I hear Everton are revitalised under their new manager, so that feels like a definite defeat the the Saints.

We'd easily be in with a shot of the top 8 and a chance of the Conference League. I don't mind missing out this season as the new stadium is exciting enough for next season, but having such a negative manager, constantly belittling he club and his players, has been quite damaging to our season.

Surprised Wolves are still part of the argument.

They are a strange team. Every time I watch them I think they look a decent side. But then they give away an absolutely terrible goal and it ruins all the good play.

I think that in the end they will just about stay up, but I'm not sure if they will be able to string together a run like we have to get out of trouble early. I reckon their defensive record means they will be in trouble all the way till May.

I want Wolves and Leicester to go down, not only cos they're located in two of the most horrible parts of the country and I feel sorry for our fans needing to travel there, but because they'll be in big trouble - especially Leicester - financially if they go down. About time somebody else apart from Everton gets made an example of.

Teams that can't score are prime candidates for relegation

Generally this is true, but I think Dyche showed last season that it is possible to be tight enough at the back to overcome it. We scored the second fewest goals in the league, and if not for the points deductions would have only missed finishing top-half by one point.

That said, the scoring had gotten even worse this season. I think when he left we were on pace to only score 30 goals, and that's walking a dangerous line. If the defending dipped even the slightest, or we had picked up a key injury, or Ipswich/Leicester hit a good run of from for a few weeks, we'd have been down. I'm much more looking forward to just enjoying these next three months and the final games at Goodison for what they are without the prospect of relegation hanging over us. If we move up the table and overtake a few more teams that's great, but most importantly we'll be playing our first game at BMD as a Premier League side.

Hopefully this is the end of these nightmare few years , for me this has been worse than the 90s

It has, really, and I though the Walter years were the absolute nadir.

But even those days weren't blighted by points deductions, PSR, Frank Lampard, the Rafatollah, 777, Denise, Headlockgate, The Esk, and Richard Masters.

Looking back, Walter's days were almost halcyon. 7 centre-halves on the pitch, one up front, Duncan sold out from under us, signings bought on credit returned to the seller, 3-0 at Middlesbrough, and the constant chorus of "Disappointed". They should have added Electronic to the stadim playlist.

Yes, you are absolutely right. They have potential all over the park but their teamwork defensively causes their downfall. Makes me appreciate our defensive structure.

40 points has always been said to be the relegation magic number.. This needs to be revised downwards. A situation looks to be developing where the 3 teams that come up will go straight back down with 3rd from bottom having a points total in the mid 20s to low 30s..
