The thing is, it wouldn't surprise me if the right wing press manages to do the mental backflips required to defend a Tory Prime Minister lying to the Queen!

Only thing those papers love more than a hard right Tory government, is the Queen. Unanimous upholding of the Scots court judgement means they will rage against him lying to Her Maj.

He'll have the Express with him and that's it. He's in deep trouble.

Johnson could punch the Queen in the face, squat over her and defecate on her face...and the gammons will still vote for him.

"JUSS GERRON WIDD IT!!!!"

Thats it. The sensible people within the upper echelons of the British state will be acutely aware the contagion can spread very quickly. I'd imagine Johnson and Cummins are going to be hung out to try quite soon. It's not even a particularly hard sell, everyone knows Johnson is an incompetent, lazy, reckless idiot so they hardly have to convince the public on that.

Whatever you think of the British Establishment, they are incredibly versatile and resilient if nothing else. There is no way they throw hundreds of years of governance away because Johnson throws a bit of a tantrum.

I've never wrapped my head around this fundamental contradiction... which is given the bold above is actually true and applies to Rees-Mogg too... why the hell is he PM? Why is he popular with Tories, despite him being a complete oaf?

It's as self-harming to the Tories as Corbyn is to Labour.

I can kind of understand Rees Mogg more. Rees Mogg behind the scenes is by all accounts quite an affable nice bloke. He's been chosen by Johnson because if the intention was to sell a deal back to the ERG he'd be influential. He's pretty committed to Brexit and is not in it in any way for his own personal political gain (which just isn't the case with Johnson).

Johnson is there, because the establishment have lost control of the tory party. They have completely lost sense with what their purpose is. They also don't really understand what you require to be a good Tory leader. Wild voluntarism isn't it. They will not let Johnson bring the house down.
