Loads coming through which will be good for options from the bench and cup competitions, etc. Just hope we don't use too many at any one time and they are afforded a lot of patience, which I am sure they will be. Dunno about switching Baines like, he's still absolutely quality on his day at left back. If anything I'd send out Garbutt on another season's loan, especially with Oviedo being a more than able depute at full back. No point juggling three left backs. Get him on loan (get a few out imo) to the Championship with a recall clause and it's win-win.

A few years back, our under 18's won the league. None of that bunch made it to the first team. Its a big jump for the players to make.
One of those players was also league 1's player of the season... Another player of the year for their team... Moyes effect mate just listen to what sheedy said about him with youngsters. Moyes got praised for bringing through youngsters the truth is he only ever played them when our squad was injured or we won the Europa group stage early

Connor Grant. Watch the kid play a few games and argue against it if you can

I've never seen him play unfortunately. How would you describe him as a player? What are his strengths/weaknesses from what you have seen? Really hope he does well. Seems like a grounded lad from what I've read and he's a massive Evertonian as well which is always a good thing. Also he's Tony Grant's nephew I believe.

.....just watching the play-off final & a reminder that potential doesn't always reward at the top level. Amongst the Fleetwood subs is Stephen Schumaker, ex-England schoolboy international and Everton youngster. He was part of that incredible achievement of 3 lads from Cardinal Heenan playing for England in the same season. Another was John Welsh who played for the reds. Both went on to earn a living in the lower tiers, but its such a fine line between the very top and relative failure for these kids.

It looks like being Browning or Garbutt but they're not going to shift Coleman or Baines. I don't think anyone will break into the side next season in the way that Barkley and Stones have done but we'll probably see quite a few players becoming more integrated into the first team and playing in cup competitions.

Lets be honest though, I dare say before the season started that none of us would have predicted the impact Stones would make. Given how Barkley floundered under Moyes, it was far from certain that he would break through either. Never say never.

I think that Stones was highly-rated before he joined us but that he was expected to be Coleman's understudy. Roberto has put a lot of faith in him but we also didn't have a lot of alternatives, especially when Jags and Distin were both out.

It maybe says more about Moyes than anybody else that Barkley wasn't given a fair crack under his stewardship. But then Ross is still very young and he had missed a year of his development, so this year was always likely to be his breakthrough year anyway.

In both cases there has been a vacancy in the side that needed filling. Roberto could have stuck with Osman in the hole but then we'd still have needed back up.

At the moment I can't see any glaring opportunities for someone to step up.
  • McAleney would be competing with Barkley and Osman. He might get a chance in a wider position now that we've lost Deulofeu.
  • Ditto Grant, Kenny and Ledson. It might be a bit soon for them and we have no reason to rush them through.
  • I don't think that Browning and Garbutt are far away but Hibbo couldn't even get a look in for the cup games and Oviedo will be pushing Baines for the left-back berth.
  • Lundstram could get a chance depending on the fitness of Gibson, whether Barry joins and if we bring anyone else in.
  • From the small amount that I've seen of the U21 I think that the penny has finally dropped for Gueye and that Kennedy probably needs another season.
  • I like Hope and Long but they're not going to be starters in our current system. They might get thrown on if we're chasing a game, but I still think that they're a bit raw.
One fairly feasible scenario is that Barkley suffers second season syndrome following his league exploits and going to the World Cup. We might then have three or four suitors for his position while he rediscovers his form. A lot depends on who we sign, injuries and how far we go in the cup competitions too.

Pre season last year he struck me as a younger carrick type player, retains the ball well and keeps things moving, very much like Barry and McCarthy have subsequently done. He's a Martinez type player and at 19 probably has to get some Europa league games this year to develop

Not my prediction but I hope it is Hallam Hope. Instead of buying a striker it would be nice to have one coming up in the ranks.

McAleney has got a decent contract offer from Wigan. We are only offering him a short term deal. Unless we up the offer he'll be off and you couldn't blame him.

Hard for us as fans to determine whether he's worth a long term deal as we haven't seen that much of him. Maybe we could structure a buy back price if we waved the compensation we would be due or something.

At the moment doesn't look like he'll be breaking through here. I think proper talent wise it's got to be Ledson but he could probably do with a year out on loan.
