Lets be honest though, I dare say before the season started that none of us would have predicted the impact Stones would make. Given how Barkley floundered under Moyes, it was far from certain that he would break through either. Never say never.
I think that Stones was highly-rated before he joined us but that he was expected to be Coleman's understudy. Roberto has put a lot of faith in him but we also didn't have a lot of alternatives, especially when Jags and Distin were both out.
It maybe says more about
Moyes than anybody else that Barkley wasn't given a fair crack under his stewardship. But then Ross is still very young and he had missed a year of his development, so this year was always likely to be his breakthrough year anyway.
In both cases there has been a vacancy in the side that needed filling. Roberto could have stuck with Osman in the hole but then we'd still have needed back up.
At the moment I can't see any glaring opportunities for someone to step up.
- McAleney would be competing with Barkley and Osman. He might get a chance in a wider position now that we've lost Deulofeu.
- Ditto Grant, Kenny and Ledson. It might be a bit soon for them and we have no reason to rush them through.
- I don't think that Browning and Garbutt are far away but Hibbo couldn't even get a look in for the cup games and Oviedo will be pushing Baines for the left-back berth.
- Lundstram could get a chance depending on the fitness of Gibson, whether Barry joins and if we bring anyone else in.
- From the small amount that I've seen of the U21 I think that the penny has finally dropped for Gueye and that Kennedy probably needs another season.
- I like Hope and Long but they're not going to be starters in our current system. They might get thrown on if we're chasing a game, but I still think that they're a bit raw.
One fairly feasible scenario is that Barkley suffers second season syndrome following his league exploits and going to the World Cup. We might then have three or four suitors for his position while he rediscovers his form. A lot depends on who we sign, injuries and how far we go in the cup competitions too.
