Ok so here's the deal..been dating this Mexican girl for a bit...nothing serious although I did slot her.

Anyways...trying to keep this short..she's here legally and all that...got a decent job (I actually met her on a job interview with here company)...she's educated, pretty, funny...really a great girl. Her company works their people to death and has unrealistic expectations...which is why I didn't accept their offer even though it would have been for a lot of money.

So...the last couple days we've been talking and she's stressed out and working her ass off to prove to them that they didn't make mistake in moving her here from Philadelphia and giving her the opportunity...she's feeling like she can't balance work/life. As a matter of fact we were supposed to go to dinner/movie last night and her CEO threw a meeting on her calendar at 6pm screwing our plans.

Winding up...we were exchanging IM's on Facebook today off an on...then about 2 hours ago she IMs' me and says "John marry me so I can my Greencard. How much would you charge?"

I have no idea if she was kidding but I assumed so, so I responded "We can negotiate :)"

Then I started freaking out, thinking she might be serious, and I said "maybe you'll want to marry me for real though? :) "

She responded "mmm...are you offering?"

Well now I'm totally confused and freaked out so I responded "Weeeeelll...this is sort of out of the blue...hadn't thought about it in terms of NOW...I do know I like you and am attracted to you and want to get to know you better.."

FFS I'm engaged aren't I??????
Congratulations. Or something.

What's the Greencard mate?

Permanent Residency...she's here on a visa which is tied to her employer...job goes away, so does the work visa...with a Greencard or Permanent Residency she can work for any company without needing them to sponsor her for a new work permit.

Please feel free to weigh in here lads. For once I'm the one needing advice.

If she was serious, then I'll never get it out of my head that she wants me for the Greencard...

I'd try to talk about it in person, at least then you'd pick up on her body language. Was she joking, serious, etc? Seems too important to leave at written communication

I think it's like greenshield stamps. You can trade them in for groceries at local supermarkets.

*orders 0 greencards

So she may have been serious at first then.. I think you need to speak to her face to face before agreeing something

yeah we need to talk for sure. This is why text, IM etc can be frustrating...I have no idea if she was joking or serious. It came completely out of the blue. She didn't put a smiley face or haha or lol after it so I think she was serious.

Here's my problem. I like her. But now, I'll never get it out of my head if she seriously proposed that.

What is going on here Jamo?
OK. Can't speak for the girl obviously but.... Maybe she's not into depending on this company for her residency. She likes you but would also like more freedom of movement in the job market. She might just be a very pragmatic girl who sees this as an opportunity to be with you and keep her options open professionally within the US at the same time. She seems to have been quite frank about the situation. Talk to her mate. It's the only next move open to you.
