The Laptop Situation

McBain

Player Valuation: £80m
I need a new Laptop for the next gig I'm doing.

To go into this thing firing on all cylinders, I need to upgrade the old tech.

In my industry Mac is the bee's knees. Who knows why, its seemingly more complicated to use and three times more expensive.

I've peered down that path for a couple of weeks, and honestly, the only advantage there is a cosmetic one. It's a 'Look at me, I've got a mac.' approach. You're looking at $1200 minimum for the basic, and I need to spend about 2k to get the right specs. Between $800 - $1000 on ebay.

Minimum 15" screen
4 gb ram
2+ ghz
150 HDD minimum (Ive got EXT HDD's so not too fussed)
DVD RW

Price - between $500 and $1000au which is $449 to $899US and 288 to 576 pounds.

Is ebay good for Laptops? What would you recommend? Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

*I know weve one this before..but it needs an update

Do you work in the music business? I ask because macs are really good for music related things.

The film Industry young Spike.

Its basically for Location photographs, managing pics and email, documents and officey stuff. Nothing too fancy but I want something fast.

Macs are industry standard for music productions, and film editing, as well as photography. Bite the bullet and invest in the new mac pro lid.

You can get a decent 2nd hand intel mac, or if you want to bite the bullet go for the new i5 Mac.

Don't do it.

I've used Macs all my life and have always reccomended them, until now.

I've got an Imac G5. All of a sudden the 2 of the USB ports died, so now only have one for the keyboard. Googled the issue and there are literally thousands of other with the same problem and no way to resolve it. I've tried all troubleshooting and nothing works. its buggered.

Then yesterday a strange blue line appeared approx 1 inch from the right hand side of the screen and will not go away. googled this as well. Once again thousands of people with the same problem and no way to resolve it. Some peoples were really bad.

Mac response to both these issues, if its out of warranty buy a new one. Buy a friggin new one??? Might as well use that spare 2k i have lying around.

The big [Poor language removed], was buying an ipod shuffle only to find you can only use Mac Headphones or buy a 2 inch long converter cable for £15 that has now broke.

Basically Mac products are great when they work, but recently they seem to keep going wrong more and more often. In 15 years I have never know Mac to be this [Poor language removed]. They truly are terrible.

My advice?

Use once of these.

I've got a Samsung. I've had Sony Vaio's before...

Samsung is best bang for your buck. And it's just generally nice to do work or anything on.

I'd always buy Samsung straight off the shelf mine was on the low end of that price and is a top mid range laptop. and it's absolute gem. Best laptop I've had. Samsung R522 9 months old.

Only thing I'd improve is a 3D graphics card improvement....

4 hours battery life I've had on mine. Its superb.

I use mine for some high end applications "memory crunching" but it does it no worries.

Otherwise any Samsungs a good buy.

Excellent stuff there, Macs are over rated and cause irrational obsessiveness in those who use them. As if they have to justify to themselves why they spunked way over the top on one of them and got little value for money, they're just image.

Ghost?

Get a PC and install Linux (Ubuntu) and not Windows. Look up a few Ubuntu command line tutorials. It really is the best, quickest and easiest way to manage files and data. If you know what you're doing you can automate a job that you would have to manually spend hours doing on Windows or Mac.

And because Linux is free you'll be saving yourself a bundle on new OS's. Ubuntu has become much more user-friendly in the past couple of years and if you haven't tried it yet now really is the time to do so. If you don't like it you can always go out and buy a copy of Windows anyway.
