I'm not even talking about low paid labour. I'm talking about real slaves who have been smuggled into the country illegally, had their passports withheld and forced to work in various areas including the sex trade. There are believed to be 1000s of real slaves in the U.K right nowhere

Of course. But the "low paid labour" is still part of the modern slavery act that big companies have only until recently started to put a stop too.

But you're correct.

The University of Liverpool have agreed to rename Gladstone Hall, named after the prominent ex-PM William Gladstone, due to his families links to slavery.

Although his father owned slaves on his plantations, Gladstone was never a slave owner himself; his politics with regards to slavery are questionable.

If you're an old blue of the Blue Coat, there's calls for Blundell's name to be removed too although he was a captain of a slave ship.

Call it the Ken Dodd Hall instead

Removing them is winding up all the right kind of people

Poor paul, getting teary eyed about a statue of a man responsible for over 10 million deaths in the Congo. Tough times for conservatives.

I can't get over how worked up people get. If a statue of my favourite person for taken down I don't think I would care at all.

It's history we are supposed to learn from history......do we close the concentration camps down historical tours - remember Germany in that era tried to erase that part of history ...they blew up a hell of lot of the camps .....to try to hide the truth .....
Museums are the best place then the public have the choice to view them ...or the historical sites....
At school History is a subject to learn from so it never happens again - not use it as acts of thuggery like today,s events .......
That's the point a true accurate of history is not reflected on. We get a bit on slavery as in we partook, however, pages and pages of William Wilberforce, and going to war with Portugal and sun never set on the British Empire and they all lived happily ever after.

If people want history it should come with warts and all. People have been making representation to at least have some references to slavery by the side, however, there is always opposition...

This house TV series is in Bristol this series this week it's in Bristol being a a port the whole city was unfortunately founded on Slavery ......plus the main perpretatators had slave boys in their houses .....most ports in the U.K. Thrived on slavery in that era -
An event in the USA has caused protest rightly, but not in covid19 pandemic times where social distancing went out of the window.......

As to the Germans, whilst you'll find a lot of stuff telling you how awful the DDR was (and quite rightly so) and the horrors of the Nazi era can't really be denied I would say that they don't really do a lot of introspection or commemoration. The laws in their constitution and the Nurenberg trials forced them to look in the mirror but afterwards there was kind of a code of silence around what Opie did in the 30s and 40s. Their treatment of their Turkish community was awful for a long time, also.
What is "Opie"?
