Current Affairs The Labour Party

A decent idea, though I’d hoped he would have used the speech to attack a lot of the waste that exists in public spending (outsourcing, contracting, PFI etc). It’s a really open goal that successive Labour leaders have ignored, probably because it means war with Blair and the centrists).

If this pandemics taught nothing else it’s that aside from programmes with a very narrow, specific focus, bringing in “private sector expertise” to run public bodies and services hasn’t been the success we were promised (note - this isn’t saying that said expertise wouldn’t be useful in showing how a service might be delivered, just that actually running it has not been).

If people running his leadership campaign are jumping ship, it's ominous.

He seems to be trying to make the LP into a hybrid of UKIP and the LibDems. An utterly monstrous concoction.

He's not a political animal. He's seen the LP leadership and then the PM job as a career ticking exercise. You have to be completely impassioned and tribal to achieve anything in politics. As the article you linked underlined, even Blair was tribal and hammered the Tories and kept his internal enemies onboard.

Gone in 6-12 months this feller. The opinion polls are a calamity for him. Four points behind a Tory Party that's murdered 118,000 people.

CAN YOU WEAR A NECKLACE MADE OF EARS STARMER?

(language slightly nsfw).

Pathetic speech. 'More good things, less bad things; 1945; different path, yada yada yada'

In the words of Dubya: "Where's the beef?"

More hand-wringing and phraseology.

"A new partnership with business. Backing British entrepreneurs."

Lordy.

“Earlier this week the political strategist Tom Kibasi, a key figure in Starmer’s leadership campaign, said his leadership was on a ‘journey to nowhere’.

‘If Starmer were to depart as leader tomorrow he would not leave a trace of a meaningful project in his wake,’ he added.”.......

...I disagree with that, I think the meaningful aspect of his tenure will always be that he’s not Corbyn. It’ll take more than Starmer to challenge for power, but as I said when he was appointed, this is about setting it up for whoever follows.

Its all vax related mate.

Once things settle down, politics will settle down.

That said, Starmer has a bit of a charisma bypass.
He's not suited to politics in the 21st century. He thinks he can act non-tribally and make a pitch fir the famed central ground. He's a boy scout who the Tory media machine will demolish very easily when the time comes to do that.

I dont read any newspapers, sport and crossword aside, I get my "news" from Talksport, and the Covid briefings. I look at local stuff, and browse some BBC articles. Thats it. Oh, some finance sites from my previous life.

I have heard some soundbites, from Talksport, and he just sounds dull. That weird National Bond thing makes zero sense. It would just transfer state money into the hands of folk who have decent levels of savings already.

He's an identikit politician. He's what they're supposed to look and sound like. He's Labour's Mitt Romney.

6-12 months - ousted.

All going swimmingly.

Guilty, m'lud.
