"The rail industry could be completely renationalised within five years if Labour wins the next election, the shadow chancellor has suggested.

John McDonnell said he was looking at whether break clauses in contracts could allow rail franchises to be taken into public hands before they expired.

He is planning to create a new unit in the Treasury to oversee the party's wider nationalisation plans.

It would advise on issues such as possible compensation for shareholders."

As far as the railways are concerned, we should consider nationalisation without compensation.

most of the franchises are not that long, just don't renew them and take them back as the end.
Don't have to buy them as they don't exist at the end of franchise, and the shareholders don't own anything at that point.
most are owned by foreign state owned railways anyway, so shareholders wouldn't be as badly hit here anyway even if we did buy them, plus we could take back the ones that are not needing the terms of the francize they have there are a few of those.

So if a pensioner has a few thousand pounds of shares in a franchise, they just get robbed of that?

No, but that is because there are no firms that only exist as a franchise (ie: for the pensioner to buy shares in) - they are all groups of other businesses that would all still exist (indeed more than a few of them are nationalized foreign railway companies) after the nationalization.

Don't have to buy them as they have nothing to sell after the end of franchise.

Once the Government indicated that it was talking all the franchises back in house the value of them all would collapse anyway.
