As a student of law, without wanting to demonstrate any bias, the politicians held in highest regard throughout history - in the UK and USA have worked or studied Law.

Lincoln, Coolidge, Roosevelt (both of them), Lloyd George, Atlee...

Churchill was in the Army, Thatcher studied chemistry, Wilson studied modern history...Blair studied Law.....

Indeed, and a doctor isn't the holiest of the holy when she works for the NHS and the evilest crook should they have a few private clients on the side. We can surely accept a slightly more nuanced view of the world than some good vs evil twaddle you'd expect in a children's book (or the bible if you prefer).
Free health care or killing the disadvantaged in the name of profit is good vs evil. There is no middle ground on that, but unfortunately it goes against libertarian ethos so we have to have this constant mental gymnastics

This is sleazy clickbait.

Hobson (undoubtedly an antisemite) was nonetheless a towering intellectual presence at the turn of the century, and one of the more influential figures of his day. His study on Imperialism remains in the historiographical cannon of early scholarship on empire, and is referred to on the curriculum of every decent university in this country. You might find this of interest: https://imperialglobalexeter.com/2015/01/12/why-should-we-still-study-j-a-hobsons-imperialism/

This story is no different than trying to smear someone as an anti-semite for listening to Wagner.

They are absolutely desperate. Take heart from the fact that it must crush these people to know their smears have absolutely no impact whatsoever.

Whilst all this is faux outrage is going on, their dinner party mates are publishing articles in support of Nazis over at The Spectator. They're a complete embarrassment to their profession.

Don't quite get Williamson in the frame for this - he's routinely portrayed as being a lightweight, unsuited for the role, but at the same time a total operator and careerist.

So what possible motivation would he have to instantly flush his career down the toilet like this? He can't be both a slimy manoeuvrer and an ignorant naif at the same time.
Only thing I can think of is that the weakness of May's government and the Westminster bubble is very distorting if you are inside it, plus he is indeed a small man who doesn't fundamentally understand the weight of something like leaking defense secrets direct from the national security committee, so just lost his moorings.

For what it's worth, he's denied leaking the story.

You know its bizarre that a movement which spent at least two years claiming the Labour membership was a tiny minority in the country, so its support of the leadership didn't matter, now insists that the Labour memberships' concerns override what the country thinks.

Surely Corbyn has done exactly the same in reverse?

Not really. Corbyn has two leadership votes and a conference resolution behind his actions; the 2nd ref crowd have Watson and one line in that resolution (and are ignoring the rest of it).
