UK have one the lowest percentage of people living in apartment buildings in Europe. Im not exactly sure why that is the case. Very common here. Maybe it’s a snob culture and it’s seen as low grade housing or something? Would say that the housing designs are usually cheap and horrific though.

Mate of mine moved in to a brand new ground floor apartment building in Edinburgh. He was having problems with the drain beneath the shower so we took apart the panelling and there was an empty bottle of buckfast that the lads fitting it must have chucked there. Plumbing on the whole building was a mess.

@john jako was obviously involved in the build.

New build estates on the UK are all about cramming in as much into the space available as possible. With uniformity to cut costs.

Rented a (very) small house on a new build estate on the outskirts of Swindon, which is festooned with them. Four houses in a block, no garden. Teeny. Spare room was basically a broom cupboard. Marketed as family accommodation. Fine for me, not sure how the couple and their baby daughter next door coped. No storage space at all. Similar were selling for circa £170k in 2017/2018.

Madness.
I see plenty of construction work round me. All buildings looking good and rarely see identikit structures. Plenty of focus on providing good outdoor spaces and play areas as well with local business and retail places available.

When I come back to the UK I’m always struck how grim a lot of the new housing looks. No creativity or long term planning, or focus on creating communal spaces. Most places look like they’ll need replacing in 40 odd years as well.

There also seems to be nothing near them, no shops, no pubs, nothing.

Stuck on what used to be farming land next to main roads.

Soulless.

Yeah, yeah, don’t forget Brexit, 22 Billion black hole, fixing the foundations, yabba yabba yabba. Meanwhile do you have any kind of view about the financial crisis Starmer and Reeves have created or Starmers plan for AI to save the day….

Labour have inherited a borderline flat economy with very few economic levers available for growth in the short term. Anyone expecting quick fixes given these circumstances is delusional as Truss.

However, economists predicted the UK economy to grow by 1.25% in 2025, the BOE 1.5%. So if the economy goes into recession I think we have to put the blame onto the Chancellor then. There's only so much time we can continue to blame the previous administration. Will come down to Starmer using the majority to see her through it.

A well balanced and insightful article by Professor Wyatt below. Some challenges ahead for Starmer for sure, you really cant have your cake and eat it, however, some opportunities. It's not a all or nothing game as some commentators would try and love to suggest..

She's toast.

AI can be incredible for productivity though, have you seen the Davek bot at work in the Everton forum, the site traffic is insane.

Disgraceful comment from someone who kept defending the Chinese over Covid origins. Well let’s see what the age related deaths are over this cold spell for OAP’s without their winter fuel allowance. Hopefully they will be kept low…….

Interested to know this, myself. What was the average number of non-covid winter OAP deaths for the previous 14 years? Would be good to compare to see if the removal of WFA has had an impact.
