Is it now ok to accept donations and bungs as long as it is less than what the Tories did???
So some of it is completely manufactured outage by the media , the clothes and glasses stuff I admit I’m not comfortable with .

I suppose the debate is what a bung and what’s a donation , with maybe one or two notable exceptions every MP received them, many in the last month dwarfing what the PM has recieved . If it’s in line with legislation and declared and the person isn’t a criminal , foreign national , a war criminal or whatever then I suppose if we don’t agree with it we need to change the rules . Do we stop invites to lunches , dinners , tickets to sporting matches I don’t know whatever . If Everton ever get to a final I’m assuming andy burnham despite being a ST holder might not have the away credits but he’d deserve a ticket id imagine . What I mean is is how do you stop ‘donations ‘ .

If you google mp’s it’s there to see for , pretty much , all of them. The difference if the media have seen this has gained traction whilst at the same time the Tory leadership candidates have had considerably more . My issue with the likes of Johnson is him not declaring it , not saying who paid it , deleting his messages . I think I said at the time of course it matters if Curtis warren had paid for his refurb .

Impeccable regurgitation Pete. Originally Daily Mail? I’m getting heady whiffs of Farage flag sweat with subtle undertones of Princess Di…

Is recategorising an already declared donation from October 2023 the best you have today?

Meanwhile
“In July and August alone, the four candidates to become the next Conservative leader – Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick, James Cleverly and Tom Tugendhat – received between £70,000 and £160,000 in donations each”
You should go and have a quick look back through his posting history on previously undeclared gifts.

Historically, remarkably silent or unconcerned by it.

100% its getting blown out of proportion. A new story will be leaked in a few days to further the outrage.

Labour will get painted the same as the Tories with Reform being the answer to solve the issues of the country. The rightwing media will back Farage at the next election.

Ha Ha Ha.

How ridiculous.

You'd think it was a matter of putting together a new enigma machine when it's very very simple: no MP receives ANYTHING. They are there to carry out the function of being a representative of their constituents, and the salary + expenses they can claim are for those purposes, as that amounts to a pretty penny indeed. Cash and clothing and hospitality are simply unwarranted.

FFS.

The incredible tortuous pondering over this when the answer can be arrived at in seconds.

The only thing stopping you from reaching that conclusion is a defence of the people you wasted your vote putting into office, and you now feel the need to defend the indefensible because of it. You and others on here, I might add.

It kettles my head that the king of the grifters and a man who should be in the tower gets the benefit for allegations of corruption. It’s crazy .

Somebody sent me a clip of a talk tv item with I oakshott and I think Mike Graham making thinly veiled allegations about starmer’s private life , family and ‘open secrets’ . Graham also mentioned sexuality , presumably because lord Alli is gay , but was shut down. That guido Fawkes has claimed starmer has broken electoral law and alli is in thrall to Assad. It’s absolutely non-stop now and they’re doing everything they can to rubbish this fellas name . Unfortunately it seems to be working

MPs annualy get £91,000 and Ministers get £150,000. Then there's their expenses in all their guises:

  • accommodation costs
  • staffing costs
  • office costs
  • transportation costs
  • Financial support for families
...they add up to tens of thousands of £s more on top of their salaries.

An average MP today has a total cash and expenses salary of around £150,000; Ministers get considerable more than that.

Taking donations is an insult.

Things that are true usually do work.

It is remarkably easy for people working in the public sector to get by on their salaries without donations; not only do all of them do this, if they did take donations they would be at best sacked and in some cases (cops and judges being the most obvious) would face serious criminal charges.

MPs and councillors are an exception because they make the rules, and this is so demonstrably unfair that the public react to it out of reflex habit now.

i was thinking the same. Where I work, Its a huge no no to accept any client gifts and I would be sacked instantly. I can’t see why this doesn’t apply to MPs.

This government could have come in and really cracked down on all this kind of thing and positioned themselves as returning accountability to politics.

Still think it’s pretty much a non-story mind and is nothing compared to what went on previously.

…..regardless of how murky this looks, it’s clear the media are not going to give Labour an easy ride in Government.

My understanding is that the ‘freebies’ have been declared so are not against the rules. If the public feel strongly about it then the rules might need changing.

Key for me is whether MPs are using public/taxpayers money or cash donated by private individuals. Starmer & Co appear to be using private donations but the look isn’t good, perhaps the rules need changing to reflect this.

I know what you mean. However, the leadership of that party would have to come in and then completely disavow all the donations they'd run up in opposition, so would've looked like the hypocrites they currently do.

No, there's no way out of this now for Starmer's Gang. The die is cast. They'll carry on with their taking of donations because it's part and parcel of 'democracy' in this country - the lobby - and they wont do a thing to challenge that. But they now have to STFU forever on lecturing anyone about bringing back integrity and propriety to politics in Britain and cleaning it up.
