Most of the critics seem to be saying "but he had a beer" as though that's the determining factor, when it is not.

It's a very juvenile understanding of the issues, but then juvenile is the stage where a lot of these Tory commentators have stalled at.

It’s ‘Trumpian’ mate. They’ve bought into a person, rather than a policy, or an ideology, or a pragmatic idea of competence.

Boris could have announced a full on socialist policy, or an extreme libertarian one, and his supporters would back it exactly the same.

Because he did do Beergate, and everyone knows it, the Local plod decided not to prosecute and so he got away with it….

All I can say is that I, and many hundreds of thousands of others (if not millions), did 'beergate' or whatever term you wish to give it, for decades in that we ate lunch at our desks and drank liquid refreshment during our lunch break before continuing with our work, or sometimes indeed while working through our lunch break. You haven't got a clue, mate!
