I note that certain sections of the UK press are pushing a narrative, post Plymouth shooting, that there is a dangerous 'incel movement'.

Now, personally I find the whole concept of angry internet numpts basically saying "I can't get laid and I can't figure out why" really amusing. However, what's the wider GOT view. Is it a genuine threat? Is a new wave of violent misogyny about to sweep Britain (and elsewhere)? Should we jst round them up into a camp and make them wear t-shirts emblazoned with 'virgin'?

A lot of it stems (from what I've seen) from Elliot Rodgers in Isla Vista, he's became a figurehead for the sexually deprived and obviously just plain crazy. This Incel stuff does at this point start to resemble all the active shooter cases we've seen since Harris and Klebold (sp?) in Columbine. However, nutjobs will be nutjobs and they love to attach themselves to a "movement", I think we're all aware of that now.
The thing I'm curious about is whether they would have carried out these attacks if Columbine/Rodgers hadn't happened?

Its a good point. Brevik was another great example. Extreme hatred for a particular group, including those of his own 'kind' who didn't share his views so he felt the need to wake them up.

Like everything nowadays this is a fashionable new term coined for something that has been around for ages (in this case probably as long as men have been able to write and women have been able to tell men to get lost).

The medieval code of chivalry being perhaps the best example, or failing that if anyone has read Peter Padfield's biography of Himmler he quotes extensively from his teenage scribblings which are incredibly similar to "incel" writings today - complaining that his ideal woman doesn't exist, that the women that do exist reject him, all the fantasies of war and heroism that would inevitably lead him to a better, simpler life with a virtuous woman or an honourable death etc etc.

Of course, like most of these types when he did finally con someone into a relationship he dumped her for a younger version the moment he was able to.

What percentage of what age range are incels or classify themselves as such? I presume it's teens to early 20s and not actually that high a percentage.

Yeah, that was an extreme response, but I'd argue driven by social media. I guess her profile resonated with a lot of young women. Yet, when am older pcso went missing / got found murdered it was a far more muted reaction.

Back on topic, these self proclaimed 'involuntary virgin' tits are out there though, so obviously are dangers. To whom is less clear. Probably themselves mostly.

I am not sure about that - I think he’d probably have self harmed if anything, the gun just made killing others as easy as killing himself.

Yeah, I guess. It's just speculation on both our parts, tbf. I can see the gun offers ease. But none of us truly knows what's gone on in his head.
