Seeing as Ossie and the commentater on EvertonTV had no useful suggestions, thought I'd try you lot...

My special subject is 'The Cold War in Europe' and I've got my first essay to start. I'm doing 'Why did the Grand Alliance break down?'

Any ideas on where to start, what points I should be looking at etc?

cheers lids

Just imagine that these three piles of sawdust represent the US, the Soviet Union and Nelson Mandela.

See how the Soviet Union looks at the US? And notice Mandela's expression throughout it.

There you have your answer, I would like accredited in your thesis please.

Mate , this is my subject , but , by Grand Alliance , I take it to mean the Wartime Allies ???

The breakdown was inevitable . Fundamentally oposed Idoelogies whom were enforced bed-fellows . As soon - before it actually ended , ie , the War finished , Stalin had a post-conflict programme in place from las early as ate 1944 . Check the Katyn Massacre , the Blag Polish Regiments of REALLY Russian Troops intending to resettle .

Moreover , the Conferences basically tell the tale . Rooseveldts inherent distaste for the British Empire - AND his indirect wish to supercede it with an American one ; led him to go with Stalin on major issues which would eventually cost nearly 50 years of political brinkmanship .his health was fading , the Russkies saw this and pushed harder . Meanwhile , Winston was in danger domestically and the Consensus was no longer as consenting as in the early War years .

" An Iron Curtain , from the Urals in the East ,..."

Start from there . If you get stuck , give us a shout .

Correct.

Thanks for that lcab mate, will definitely be reading up on the things you mentioned (y) Very useful ta.

LCAB is right. The keyword here is "yalta". All will be revealed. Also think Poland and what that government was going to look like after the war. Finally, you need to consider the affect the death of Roosevelt and the elevation of the completely inexperienced Truman (and his reliance on advisors who wanted NO part of a post war alliance with the Soviets) had on events.

LCAB is waaaaaay off.

Moreover, Stalin totally just, like, ate 1944

He's basically saying that Stalin ate 1944? How can you eat a whole year??? Einstein would be turning in his freezer.

Welts, take it from me, just start with this

"When you put your hand into a pile of goo, that moments ago was your best friends face, you'll know what to do"

This stuff writes itself mate.

Because capitalism is an expansionary system and needs to impose markets everywhere - usually with the connivance of governments of all stripes - for a chance to screw out more value and make sure an alternative system of production cant take form. Hence the Marshall Plan and the occupation of western Europe by American forces. For their part the Stalinist deformed workers state always was a busted flush based on coercion and brutal control and it needed a buffer between itself and the West to avoid 'contamination'. Hence the 'communist' satellite states of eastern Europe were created by the Soviets from the remnants of a variety of liberation forces who fought the Nazis. A backward, technocratic and bureaucratic elite cemented the Soviet Union and its client states in a pact and the Cold War ensued.

Dude , with respect , it was the BREAK-UP of the Allies . Well , pre - Marshall Plan . That was a consequence, as was NATO .

The REAL issue began as a result of the proposed " Second Front " from early 43 . We eventually invaded France in June 44 , in effect leaving the Russkies to fight alone , and Roseveldt turning snide on Winnny. We WERE NOT universally loved as the Empire , btw .

Moreover , Joe the Georgian was ALWAYS gonna turn bandit . See deal over Poland with Von Ribbontrop - pre Operation Barbarossa, and his treatment of Hero Generals , such us Zuhchov , Molotov and MANY others , post - war .

It was NEVER , EVER gonna work .

Winston , as ever , predicted the fuk out of it all .
