Our country is moving in the direction of despotism and "Un-Democracy"; several analyses point to this by studying the characteristics of nascent fascism in history; these characteristics include things like propoganda-versus-free press (e.g., Fox news), anti-intellectualism (i.e., th war against universities, their faculty and any ideas that can threaten the dominant party), scapegoating (e.g., Mexicans/Central Americans), an appeal to a mythic past (e.g., MAGA), an attempt to biologize human worth on a hierarchical scale (e.g., all sorts of racist statements about nonwhite people), victimhood for the dominant population (e.g., as demographics like LGBTQ, non-white people, etc., make in-roads the pushback is that whitemen are the real victims), an emphasis on law-and-order politics (which perpetuates the us/them that are being scapegoated), and so on.
This is all outlined in a easy-to-read book "How Fascism Works" from which the above ideas are taken (the book is a bit too shallow in places, but overall thesis is good). Another good book on this topic is "How Democracy Dies", which also comparatively studies the erosion of democratic principles by left and right dictators.
Trump isn't Hitler by definition, nor by analogy, but when many analysts point to how quickly our democratic principle have already eroded under this government (e.g., this was a government, who a few days ago, wanted rewrite legal definitions for how we treat transgender individuals), or have the potential to erode if we stay with this current government, this suggests that something is very very wrong with our current government.
