A thread for hindsight and discussion about the England World Cup journey.

For me Southgates stubbornness in his team selection finally came back to bite us. Playing with a horrendously out of form Alli and Sterling was akin to playing with 9 men.

I feel we absolutely underestimated Croatia, the media expected us to stroll in and batter them and I feel
That could’ve rubbed off on the England camp too

Honestly the future looks better for England than it did a few years ago.

Yeah, you have the odd dud like Alli and Sterling but they have a chance to come good as they come to their peak years.

The spine of that side is surprisingly good, but they lack a metronome in midfield that can make things tick and provide a bit of invention. A fit and firing Ross Barkley would make that a very dangerous side, or a Loftus-Cheek in a few years perhaps.

All in all, England fans should be delighted with this tournament. I expected them to embarrass themselves and go out in the group stages, so for me they've vastly exceeded expectations, even when you consider the 'easy' run they had.

It's better in the sense that they can take confidence from this, but you have to take into account reversion to the mean. They've been made to look better than they are by a hugely favourable draw, so for the Euros will have to continue improving significantly. I mean we're ranked I think 12th in the world, and we didn't beat anyone above us in that list. We'll go overboard as that's what we do, but I'm sure Southgate will keep some perspective.

We had the luck with the draw and took advantage of it. Getting to a World Cup semi final is a massive step forwards.

Overall though, I'm not convinced it's going to be a regular thing. The team still lacks balance and Croatia exploited the midfield tonight. We are absolutely crying out for a number 10 who can link the play together and there was no one to do it.
