Player Valuation: £8m
The value of tying players down to long-contracts is not in question. How much would we have got for Anichebe if he had only 12/18 months left on his contract?
A week or so ago, Martinez said it was the right thing to do to wait for the transfer window to end, and then see where we are with players' contracts. He also said upon joining he wanted to reward good players for their good work when talking specifically about Leighton Baines.
I thought it would be interesting to search the net and find out when some of our players' contracts are expiring, to discuss what should be in Roberto Martinez's thoughts, and the club's thoughts.
Players contracts expiring at the end of this season:
Tony Hibbert - signed a new contract in 2010. Will be 33 when his contract expires. Worth another one-year contract? Would he want 2? Should we be prepared to offer him anything? 1 or 2 years more as experienced backup? Or let him go? He's too young to retire surely.
Sylvain Distin - signed a new one year deal (Jan 2013) until June 2014. In his last year, but turning 36 in coming December. Alcaraz/Stones will be important here as I don't think the club will offer him much more in ways of a contract. Bruno Martins-Indi would be the perfect replacement. Martins-Indi signed a new 4 year deal in 2012. But his fee has been touted as as low as £4m in the past. Could be a bargain replacement.
Heitinga - Apparently we begun contract negotiations in October 2012. But this never materialised. Looked decent against Stevenage in a CB cum DM role. Will get games due to injuries and suspensions and I'm certain Martinez will want to sort this situation out sooner rather than later. Our position is strengthened by tying him down to a contract now, even if we end up selling him in the summer or beyond. If we have a successful season and have him tied down, he could again be worth £4m+ to us in a transfer fee. Is it worth letting him leave this summer on a free? Is that what he's intending? Still only 29 and an established international.
Apostolos Vellios: Entered his last 12 months, his contract is up at the end of the season. His time could be up, or he may be sent on loan and do well. Martinez may even rate him enough to offer him a contract now, but time will tell. Should we be looking to offer him a contract now?
Conor McAleny - contract expires at end of this season. Lots of potential. Surely worth helping him recover from his broken leg and offering him a new deal to keep him a young asset at this club. Looked good for Brentford before his injury. And has lots of drive and directness in his running.
Hallam Hope: Contract expires this summer. People had high hopes for him. Again Martinez will need to do something if he wants to work on the potential people have commented on, or he could walk away and find another club. Came on as sub for England U-19s as recently as March 2013 against Turkey.
Players whose contracts run out summer 2015:
Leighton Baines - signed a new 5 year deal (June 2010) expiring June 2015. Absolute must we offer him a pay-rise and tie him down, like others, until 2017/18.
Alcaraz - until June 2015, may need to extend by a a year/two years this summer if he impresses this season.
Shane Duffy - signed a 3 year deal in September 2012 keeping him with us until the end of next season (summer 2015). If we send him on loan and he does well we will have to make a decision on selling him or offering him a new contract pretty soon. Martinez will need to make his mind up in the next 12 months.
Leon Osman - signed a new two year deal in May keeping him with us until summer 2015. So this season and one more. Will be 34 when his contract is about to expire. Not any concern here in the short-term.
John Lundstram - Contract expires at the end of next season (summer 2015). Another one we need to be all over now or very soon.
Chris Long - signed a 2 year professional contract in July, keeping him with us until summer 2015. Another one to keep an eye on for the club.
Luke Garbutt - Signed 2 year deal a couple of months ago keeping him with us until summer 2015. Disappointing we didn't make it a longer-term contract, he's an England youth player after all, we may send him out on loan or Martinez may just watch him play in the reserves and offer another contract next summer. He's 20 now and will be wanting to play regular football at a decent level.
Players whose contracts run out in summer 2016:
Tim Howard - signed a new Everton contract in March 2012 keeping him with us until summer 2016. He will be 37 years old when his contract expires.
Kevin Mirallas - Only signed a 4 year contract in August 2012, taking him to summer 2016. At the end of this season we will need to start thinking about offering another contract, or within a few months of next season starting, he will be entering the final 18 months of his contract.
Darren Gibson - signed 4 and a half year contract in Jan 2012, taking him to summer 2016. Similar situation to Mirallas in that he'll be entering his final 18 months fairly early into next season.
Steven Naismith - signed 4 year deal in July 2012, taking him to summer 2016 also. Perhaps we could sell him this summer or January for a half-decent fee. I think a couple of million would be decent, considering we signed him for free effectively, we might even get more, after all he's an International player.
Pienaar - contract runs until summer 2016 also, by which time he will be 34. Not much of a concern here. We have him for at least 3 seasons. How much will he be worth when he's 34?
Ross Barkley - Signed 4 and a half year deal in December 2011, taking him to summer 2016. This is one we need to be all over either now or very soon. He should be in for a pay-rise and hopefully us tying him down until *at least* 2018 summer.
Jelavic - Signed a 4 and a half year deal in January 2012, keeping him with us until summer 2016. If we're going to sell him, and get any sort of decent fee, it has to be within the next 12 months or so.
Bryan Oviedo - signed a 4 year contract (August 2012) expiring June 2016.
Junior - Signed a 4 and a half year deal in Feb 2012, keeping him with us until summer 2016. Will have to see how he does on loan this year and take it from there. Nothing to worry about right now, unlike in the case of other more senior valuable players whose contracts run until summer 2016.
Others who are on longer-term deals:
Summer 2017:
Phil Jagielka - signed a 4 and a half year deal (Jan 2013) taking him to June 2017. Nothing to worry about here
Summer 2018:
Robles - signed a 5 year contract in July 2013 until June 2018.
Seamus Coleman - signed a new 5 and a half year deal (december 2012) taking him to June 2018 - Reported to be on around £44k a week. Possible slight pay-rise in the offing to reward him?
John Stones - signed a 5 and a half year contract (Jan 2013) taking him to June 2018

For me it's an absolute priority we tie down and reward Barkley and Baines asap. Coleman is on a long-term deal but he's played out of his skin and maybe we could look at re-negotiating terms, depending on what he's on. Heitinga absolutely will be in Martinez's thoughts and we have to keep an eye on Mirallas also as well as a few of the youngsters. Vellios/Hibbert and a few youngsters, like Hallam Hope, Martinez will need to make his mind up on also.
What do you guys think Martinez/the club should do in the coming weeks/months?
