The Emergence of Steve Walsh

Is it?

Makes it worse because at least you have an excuse.
We have an excuse now. You stand still in this league if you spend £70m you go back if you spend less, just to keep pace it'll take astronomical figures. This is a process, City took 2 years of spending to get top 4 and they weren't fighting 6 other teams like we are.

To expect to sign 5 or 6 players and get instant success in such a competitive league is ridiculous in my opinion. It'll take time.

Jesus H Christ. Could you have any more of a loser's mentality?

Excuses or not, having not won anything for 22 years sucks. Do you want to go the next 22 years without any silverware?

Ain't kicked a ball yet. Spending a lot of cash.

At this rate, whatever Walsh is doing, it needs to deliver trophies in 2 years or we'll be one of them sides that spend loads and does nothing. You know who those types of clubs are.
I understand your point because with expenditure and more prominent signings (not saying marquee yet), then expectations will ultimately rise.

That can subsequently induce additional pressure from above to succeed. Nevertheless, look at the likes of Spurs and their 'gradual' climb.

Obviously I want us to succeed as much as anyone, but I'll be content if I see a marked and steady climb towards eventually succeeding.

Am I missing something here?

Beating off top clubs for Bolasie, Lookman, Pickford, Schneiderlin, Gueye....? No top clubs were remotely or seriously interested in these players and they were acquired 'efficiently' because Koeman was prepared to throw a kings ransom at the selling club to do the deals quickly.

How in the name of all that's holy is this a new, exciting and better way of doing things?

I suppose a drunken sailor throwing their money around is a source of fascination, but it's not a source of wonder.

The methodology is insane as far as I can see.
Evening Dave.

I agree. At least this window has given the fan base real optimism that the club is moving forward. It is not just the top 4 we are trying to crack anymore, but the top 6. It might not happen this season, but at least the board have given our long suffering supporters the hope that we might just succeed, with their actions.

22 years... It hurts just typing that.

You know what else hurts?

Thinking that 7th is the best possible scenario every year.
Watching our best young players lured away well before their time.
Watching us get completely slaughtered by our dear neighbours twice a year.
Having players stolen from under our noses at the last minute by other clubs.
Having at least 3 new stadium plans completely fall through.

and most of all, falling far from the motto that adorns our club crest and being far too accepting of it.

Excuses can go to f£$.
I want us to return to where we once were.

I think we are, at the very least, going to see a much more entertaining team to watch next season with these signings,
and as a few have already said we are going to get better with each succeeding year. Better times are coming, and I am delighted, especially for our young supporters who have never seen Everton win anything. Roll on the good times.

Of course not. Tis why IMO after spending close to £100 million the pressure should be ON to get some silverware.

If we don't, then Walsh and whoever is in charge from a management perspective will need binning/replacing/stern ticking off. There's no excuses now.

We had that steady climb under Moyes. We took a slight step back under Martinez - but even then had semi-finals to try and win.

We ain't a City that had nothing to begin with for eg, we're a side that's been hovering around the top 4 for nearly 15+ years lacking that final kick. Spurs have also spent a lot over the course of that time - but this is probably Pochettino's last chance season.

So saying we need to win something in 2 years after spending a lot of money, isn't much to ask IMO.

So we go from "all we need is some money to compete" to "we've got money, now we need time".

Not for me. Koeman and Walsh's scouting have to at least deliver strong challenges for the top 4 in these two seasons, as well as good cup runs with a trophy at the end.

If Martinez can get to two semi-finals with us and actually win an FA Cup with Wigan...I think it'll be within reason to raise an eyebrow to the Dutch Moyes, Walsh, and the £100million money hose if they don't.

Pressure is on for me.

Let's hope for a good cup run in both like he had, and let's hope when we meet a proper team in some sort of form we don't collapse.

Great article. My take is Walsh learnt a lot last year. It must have been very humbling (embarrassing) not landing any of the marquee players and then not even landing the 2nd tier, who quite frankly were rubbish!

I could excuse it for the excellent work done this year, truly excellent, but a part of me knows that the amateur hour work last transfer season probably has cost us Lukaku and Barkley too. We trying to make up for it, but what could have been done with the new and proposed players a year back.

So when the boys go the shine will be off these additions to some extent. But doesn't take away from the fact that this has been a much more professional display from Walsh and his team. Hope it continues!

Whether you like the players we have brought to the club or not, for once this seems a clear direction with regard to our transfer policy. Not only has SW and his scouts identified players, equally pleasing (sandro apart) is the efficient way we have conducted our negotiations to quickly get the deals done. There seems a much more professional approach to our policy, it's just a pity it wasn't in place, quickly enough last summer.

One of my best mates is a huge Spurs fan. I said to him how delighted he must have been to finish 2nd, win 12 out of their last 13 games and record home points haul.
Funnily enough, he said I'm happy, but I'd rather win something. Spurs were by far the most entertaining team to watch last season and out of the top 6, United were comfortably the worst to watch. But at the end of the day they've picked up another 2 trophies, that's what's football is all about - winning trophies. If you can do it in style, playing entertaining football even better.

Had Spurs not played their European games at Wembley they may well have won the Europa themselves.

In fact I think they are very vulnerable in that top group this season due to stadium upheaval. They are imperious at WHL and will lose that advantage.
