Jimmy Armfield has died, 82

Top bloke. Loved listening to his wonderful unbiased comments and insight on the radio. Will miss him.

"What I like to call" a true professional.
Just heard the news. Very Sad, he came across a great bloke, certainly knew his stuff and was a Joy to listen to. You could tell the other radio pundits had a great respect for him

RIP Jimmy

..a gentleman. I posted an interview with him on Radio 5 in the summer and it was a real insight into what a fine sportsman he was. He was England captain leading up to the ‘66 World Cup but got an injury. Ramsey brought George Cohen into the team and gave the armband to Bobby Moore, but Armfield showed no bitterness. He spoke very highly of Everton and Alan Ball in particular.
The interview you mention is on 5 live tonight at 10pm I believe.

Back in the days before e-mail and social media, I had cause to write to Jimmy who had written an erroneous article in the Express, about Gary Lineker during his brief time at Everton.
I honestly thought no more about it, then a week or so later I got a letter from him apologising, and agreeing he had got his wires crossed with the article. He corrected it in a later issue of the paper.
Says it all about the man that he took the time to correspond with me.
RIP Jimmy.

Sad to hear about Jimmy Armfield. Grew up listening to him on 5 live since I was a kid. Lots of modern pundits could learn from him. He kept it simple, described what was happening on the pitch, didn't try to be controversial for the sake of it, but was insightful and intelligent at the same time. And he had a natural oratory gift too. Extremely easy to listen to and enjoy.

RIP.
