.....they used to have a 'dead celebrety sweep' in the pub where folk nominate a famous person they think will pop their clogs. Everybody put a quid in each week until it was won. Sometimes it would go up to £800 or so. Have to say, I genuinely thought it was in bad taste and never entered but nominations were always interesting.

We had one on a building site where we would nominate different people to go on a one trip to outer space, no money involved but politicians, TV stars, singers and sportspeople being top of the lists. Tommy Smith aka Ugly was regularly nominated.

It’s 12 years since I went to see him at The Phil. on the basis of seeing him while I still could. He lasted longer than Glen Campbell and Bobby Womack after I went to see them. RIP
