An iconic figure and the man that looked like a hit man in a mobster movie during that 1990 World Cup, he sure was quite the assassin for those 4 weeks,

Very sad news about Toto. "Totogol" was a phenomenon. He only ever scored seven goals for Italy - six in that World Cup. Talk about a firefly. But what expressive eyes and passion when he scored. It was as if he shocked himself that he had scored - which he probably did given his overall record. He became a cult hero in Ireland, ironically, even starring in TV ads in Irish pubs. He was a better striker than his scoring record showed, but there is no doubt that he was the quintessential man for the big moment during that World Cup. Poor old Gianluca Vialli, who was effortlessly superior as a player, couldn't buy a goal. But that was an exciting Italian side: Vialli, young Baggio, Giannini, Carlo, Totogol...

They lit up a poor World Cup - and nobody lit it up like Toto. There was more fire in his eyes alone than in the most of the rest of the tournament.

Sad news about Toto. One of my early and fondest memories playing football was for Shrublands U10s (?) against Hopton. I scored a hat-trick, and as the third went in my Dad shouted from the sidelines ... "SCHILLACHI !!!!!" .

Italia 90 is my favourite World Cup finals, and Toto Schillaci was such an icon of those finals. I'll raise a toast to him next time I watch the highlights again.
