A sad loss, he could be at times a bit dodgy but at least you could excuse a lot of that because of what he'd seen himself. Compared to most modern hacks though he was a saint.

A brilliant and fearless journalist. Incisive commentator on the complexity that is the Middle East.

I was unaware that he had taken out Irish citizenship!

He will be missed.

"The drums they were a-beating time
While the pipes they loudly played
When Daly died the drums did beat
That morning in the Dagshai heat
Now we beat the drums no more"

100 years ago in Dagshai Prison James Joseph Daly, a private of the 1st Battalion of the Connaught Rangers, was shot by a firing squad. Dely was the only one of 69 (according to other sources 77) convicted in participation in the mutiny of June 28, 1920, in Jullundur (now Jalandhar, India), who was sentenced to death and the last soldier in the history of the British armed forces to be executed for the mutiny.

It is unknown when this photo was taken: before the tragic events or right before the execution. But I would like to think that this young man met his death with the same calm and dignity that we see in this photo.
