....sad to hear John O’Leary has died aged 63. John is arguably the most talented amateur footballer the City of Liverpool has produced and I thought he deserved a mention here.

He didn’t look like a footballer and was the nicest and most modest man you could meet. John was a big man but he was a genius with the ball and it was a privilege for those of us who were lucky enough to share a pitch with him.

My old fella played against and with him at Otis for a couple of games, told me he was the best player he ever played on the same pitch as

...yep, I remember John working at Otis, having a few pints in the boozer opposite. He was a magical footballer but you wouldn’t know talking to him (he was 73, not 63 as I mistyped in my original post).

Only just heard about this.
Sad news. Absolute legend.

RIP John

Am sure my dad said they gave him a job on the brush or something just so he could play for the team

Close friend of our family, heartbreaking news to discover a few days ago.

RIP.

Only just caught up with this.

Very sad to hear. I remember him playing in the Kirkby & District 1st Division when I played in that in the early '70s for the Melrose. Absolutely phenomenal player.

The Paul Orr mentioned in the Echo article is, I believe, the guy who used to manage the Knightsbridge Club in the city centre in the early '70s when my rock band played on there regularly.
