My guess is Jonnson will call a general election as its the only card he controls. The Tories 1922 committee will change the rules to enable a leadership election which he'll lose so I can't see he has any other way to save his skin (which is all he cares about).

The Labour Party are in bad shape financially, the Unions have their hands full and Johnson will roll the dice.

My guess anyway

If Johnson calls an election will be a strong play. Would probably win as well

He could try, but he still has to get that through the Commons - and even if he did win that, the public do not generally reward governments for cheap shot elections (as in 2017) and they especially don't during a crisis (or multiple crises as we have now).

Its also really hard to see what he could possibly run on - or more likely, against. That said, he may be facing the choice between a win of any sort now and an absolute wipeout in 2024 if the brown stuff really does hit the fan.

If he calls an election now the Tories will be annihilated.
I don’t think it’s as clear cut. Would mean Starmer is given more coverage and everyone can see how bland and unlikeable he is. Unless you’re a total buffoon, people knew Johnson was a liar and a chancer before he was voted in. Don’t underestimate the way the Brits like to forgive people if they’re posh.

I don't think the PM has to ask parliament to call a GE. Isn't it just between him and Her Maj?

For me it's simple - he's a political snake. If it's a choice between a GE with a slim chance of a win or a certain loss in a vote of no confidence I think he'll go for it. Plus he'd surely love the buzz of a GE and go full on Trump and try and argue its all a conspiracy!

@peteblue the early years.
