BP in record profits. Shell in record profits. Both are SCALING BACK on their climate targets.

Two issues here - the fact that this government have allowed these companies to make obscene profits in the face of ordinary folk's struggle and misery and also the opportunity for the UK to lead the way in green tech has/is being squandered.

I am raging over this.

GLOBAL profits... They are not making these massive profits only in the UK. Only a small percentage of these profits come from the UK.

BP and Shell are global companies. They are only based/headquartered in the UK. They are listed here because they view the UK as a friendly place to be based. Take that away, and they will simply move elsewhere. They will take their jobs and tax contributions with them. It's that simple.

Also, these 'obscene profits' are probably contributing to your pension fund / retirement. Be careful what you wish for...

Someone educate this person on the differences between profits and tax. Hapless.

They are all the same, but if anyone is getting it then it will be the U.K……
That's not the issue though. Well it wasn't my original point. These companies are ripping people off, domestically and internationally and are manufacturing a cost of living crisis - for record profits. The UK gov have not done enough have they?

I'm not arsed about what these companies pay in tax at the end of the financial year. The working man with a mortgage to pay or high rent just isn't. Were there opportunities to do more to help the people? Starmer suggested there was.

Don’t get me wrong, I think their profits are disgraceful, but as has been said they are worldwide profits and not just from the U.K. The whole energy market is ripping us off, with electricity prices being determined by the price of gas even though most is generated from coal, renewables and nuclear. But it’s not just energy. Food suppliers have all jumped on the bandwagon and of course strikes have just added to the increase in inflation. We should have placed a short term price cap on all of these things until we could see what was really going on. But we didn’t, and even Starmer didn’t call for one. I’d like to know what his plan is btw or is he keeping it secret……

Starmer had a fully-costed plan of freezing energy bills by way of a windfall tax. That was the plan to get people through the winter. Let's not forget that we now know British Gas have been breaking into people's houses of non-payers. They'll also be untold numbers of people being threatened with legal action over non-payment, so clearly people didn't make it through the winter.

lol I knew Starmer would be at the bottom of it. From BP’s outrageous profits to Starmer in two easy steps.
Tbf to Pete he’d right, the tax does come here, it’s what the government do with it once collected that I’m interested in.
