I thought tax evasion was an offence which involves prosecution, is it only if you are massively rich that you are allowed to say "soz you caught me, here's an extra 3mil"?

….I think most times HMRC are happy to agree to get monies back. Lots would go bust and apply for Bankruptcy and money rarely recovered if prosecution ensued. Lester Pigott and Ken Dodd kept theirs in shoe boxes under the stairs which was a bit different.

Hahahahaha the bloke the appointed to investigate boris' distant cousin that was instrumental in his £800k loan who incidentally got the top bbc role has had to step aside as hes good pals with the cousin it turns out. Did he not realise last week he was due to mark his mates homework or did they all just hope no one would realise.

what next? carrie johnson to head taskforce on former prime ministers ethics and values...

Shambles.

Johnsons pants burst into flames again. Not a good time for fire service to be on strike...

Carol going at them again.

She's coming across a bit deranged there. I get that it probably doesn't sit easily with people who view the sector negatively and wish we got back to making things again, but whether we like it or not, financial services is the biggest and most globally competitive industry we have as a country, so the government of the day doing things to support that industry isn't "that" unusual. To call it stripping the country of its dignity is an incredible use of language. Would she regard the huge subsidies being given to the steel industry in the same way?

I get she doesn't like the sector, but it contributes 8% of all economic output, 3% of all jobs, over 4% of all taxes, and generated a trade surplus of some £40bn, which probably makes it our biggest exporter by some distance. Maybe the question should be whether we should be doing "more" to support it rather than less?

The Premier League is another hugely successful British export, and it too generates the most successful participants obscene amounts of wealth. Would we advocate that the government intervenes and dictates how much players can be paid? The arts are a similarly strong export for the country, and I suspect Ed Sheeran or Adele earn far more than singers in the Royal Opera House, despite (IMO) the latter being more talented and artistically worthy. Should the government intervene there too?

I suspect her view on this is more to do with the sector finding ways and facilitating the process of offshoring and tax dodging/avoidance and the like.

That said, unless she has had an epiphany it would seem like part of a wider move, possibly into politics or a Carol's watchdog media vehicle.

I agree that the good practice in the sector should 100% be supported but equally the poor practice addressed.

I'll readily admit that I haven't read it as it's not something I'm all that interested in, but if anyone wants to and give us a precis...

On another topic, this article highlights the sheer madness of the current immigration system. I do wonder how much of this Kafkaesq bureaucracy is deliberate to put people off, which when we desperately need people to come here is frankly insane.

Aside from the madness of centrally planned labour markets, this bit also encapsulated my dislike for the whole affair and my support for open borders.

The feeling of an external force interfering in your life and your relationships is degrading. People get angry and resentful — understandably — and this can pile more pressure on relationships.
