I don't understand the stamp duty cut. The problem with the housing market is that not enough are built, but they won't go near the planning system because they're scared of losing elections, like the byelection they lost to the Lib Dems primarily on NIMBYism.

Well, the UK's primary economic activity seems to be the buying and selling of houses. If that were to slow down prices would drop. Then people might not vote conservative.

There should have been a VAT reduction to help people who are struggling. Yes I know there can be issues with getting the saving down to the final consumer, but everyone pays VAT and not everyone pays income tax or NIC, or business taxes or stamp etc. It's the easiest tax to reduce if you want to help pretty much everyone

The cut in the basic rate is good for lower earners, as is the reduction in NIC as well though. Although I have no idea why a cut on stamp duty was on the agenda here. That's hardly a pressing issue at the minute and it looks a bit ridiculous to me that they are talking it up.

As someone who works in tax, I'm glad the 6% rise in CT never happened because I've told everyone in the office for 2 years it would never happen. My remaining credibility is saved lol
