For me, the world is a better place for the English.

Cricket and F*** Off are greater legacies than an aqueduct or Christianity.

In Czech calling someone a neutered bull is considered a worthy response to be cut up on a roundabout or beaten to the last parsnip in the grocers.

Say what you like about cricket but the interpretation of it's lore didn't lead to a thousand years of schism and war.

The English are, of course, insufferable. But that's on the Tories and the media.

To be fair, you have to view the Roman Catholic church as an extension of the Roman empire, and that is still going strong. I'm not sure what the original Roman empire's stance was on industrial-scale noncery, though.
Roman gods were based on plagiarising Greek gods. For instance, Poseidon for the Greeks became Neptune for the Romans. So. With a caste system, slavery a mainstay, and open marriages all over the show, there's a good chance conquest was seen as a measuring stick amongst the nobles of the day...
