You can't airbrush history. What we did in the pre- and colonial eras was nothing that everyone else wasn't trying to do. We were just better at it.

Maybe that leaves an often uncomfortable legacy, but it still came in handy now and again like on the beaches of Normandy ...

You know I’ve been thinking of the British empire, circa 1583 - 1997, and how we can view it in retrospect. A small island and big empire, with lots of impact - many of it negatively - around the world.

Anyway a thread to discuss how you may see it.

As you say, we are a tiny island. I think its quite incredible that we ruled over 1/3 of the world!! Obviously it wasn't good for a lot of people. But its quite an impressive feat to sustain for so long..

Look at what the Americans have done with the English language. At least the Aussies don't take themselves to seriously. Also, the superbowl HT show has been going downhill since Prince utterly slayed it. Eat breakfast three times a day. Get used to the rain. Proper pubs. Cricket. Some of the funniest people ever. Some of the nastiest. A forelock tugging class system the entire world is laughing at.
