I'm looking forward to the new Maitlis/Sopel podcast The News Agents.

The trailers have the air of a graduate common room party, a bit self-congratulatory and manic but there I go - putting them in a box already and categorising them. That's the sort of thing they're going to be looking at in news journalism and politics today.

I am not. I don't know if you read Mic Wright's musings but his one on Maitlis was absolutely spot on:

A cynic might say… no, (edit) it… I am saying that Matilis’ attack of conscience is fantastically-timed, arriving after she’s in the loving embrace of a big money deal with LBC — a station whose commitment to journalistic excellence is indicated by its employment of Nick Ferrari and willingness to have the Prime Minister’s sister interview the Prime Minister’s father — and on the eve of her new podcast alongside fellow BBC ex-pats Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall.

The end of Maitlis’ lecture was an extended advert for that new Global podcast — The News Agents — which took the shine off the sermon that came with it…

Whatever our journalism does, it must earn the trust of our listeners, our audiences, our readers, otherwise we are mouthpieces, mere clients, cosy with those in authority, disconnected from those we are trying to serve.
Had Maitlis called for the BBC to be better when she didn’t have a new product to sell, it would have been bravery. Instead, it was marketing with just the right amount of morality sprinkled on top to make everyone praising it feel vicariously virtuous.

OK but do you not agree with what she is trying to say about the BBC and the way things have gone in the media?

I mean........you can accuse anyone of doing things for self-aggrandizement but the problem exists and needs looked at.

And you don't have to listen to the podcast, or LBC for that matter.

It does, but the time to say that was years ago. Where was Maitlis when Oborne named names in 2019? Or when Nick Davies did the same around 2011?

Well I don't know, do I?

Actually I'm not particularly enjoying the Newsagents podcast to be honest.
Nor do I like Laura K's show if today's is anything to go by.

Mick Lynch seems to be the only person talking sense at the moment.

Stands out from the crowd because of his honesty and integrity. It's why the news carriers stopped having him on, he is currently untouchable and that doesnt sit right with those hes speaking against and those very sadly who have said very little. It's referenced in the piece, as are a few clips from an infamous drama based in a 70's borstal unit.
