Over here they make Slivovice, it's so strong it could double as anti-freeze.

I once, by mistake, tried some that my wife's uncle had kept knocking around for special occasions.

My throat closed up, I thought I was going to die.

The special occasion he had in mind was presumably my funeral.

One of my neighbours used to make homemade wine. She called it Logie wine after her Scottie dog. It was what I imagine drinking neat meths would be like. Shame they moved, it would have come in handy in here. Multi purpose, flame thrower fuel and also for drinking!

I sympathise. Logie wine ruined me. I crawled across the road from their house after a bottle of it, puked in my front garden and didn't/couldn't get out of bed until 5pm the following day. I thought I was going to die.
