Barca's youth system draws in players from around the world. We haven't got that power of attraction.

Barca rely on massive multi-million £ signings too.

They're hardly our model to follow.

Well the players I mentioned from the academy are all Spanish born apart from 2 or 3, but they were brought their at an early age.

I wouldn't say they rely on multi-million signings. You take out Iniesta, Xavi and Messi and it doesn't matter if Villa is playing or not.

The problem with the B team is it turns the spanish lower leagues into a joke.
No promotions for certain teams, unfair advantage, lower standards, etc.

I recently heard a talk by they guy who is always on sky, he said it damages the spanish lower leagues.

The loan system is the best way to give youngsters a taste of first team football.

Well our lower league teams aren't exactly flourishing at the moment are they? Perhaps experience of playing with upcoming talented sides may improve their game too.

I don't know, it's just a thought.

Tosh mate, they tried to play the offside trap and got caught every time. They tried to be clever and play a luxury player like Ozil where they should have anchored the midfield more, and as for Benzema, less said the better.

they did both

the offisde trap in a disciplined formation.

i was amazed jose didnt change it 2nd half, it was as if he accepted defeat.

We can never keep hold on any starlet... No team but the top teams willing to pay, get and keep them.

Barca have financial clout and are a massive club so they keep their academy players easily.

Our brightest prospect is Rodwell. . . And it's only a matter of time before he goes.

I agree with what you say, but everton will only produce players we will eventually sell on as we only offer a certain level of football. If they want to develop and shine they first need to play regular then play at the highest level in Europe to be good.

We won't even get Europe for a while.

Good point though in football terms.

wrong again

the championship is the biggest '2nd division' in the world

league 1 and 2 are hugely competitive and highly proffesional, even most of the clubs in the conference (And a few in conference north and south) are ran proffesionally.

such a silly remark.

Well good points, but it's the responsibility of the club to persuade the younger players to buy into the long term future of the club. I know financially we need to sell to survive sometimes, and that's [Poor language removed]. If we did get taken over by some rich arab, I would love it if they invested heavily in the academies, and keep the club ticking over at the senior level.

I'm talking lower lower leagues, div 3 and 4 (old divisions).

All day people around the world have been talking about last nights spectacle. And it was, regardless of what you think of ego players, if one side deserves to have a bit of swagger about them, it's Barcelona.

Anyway, looking at them as a football club, they took an Englishman as their founding father. A British person from the English game took football to them, and the rest as they say is history.

Of course they had some bad times, and Real Madrid are more than a bitter rival, they were their masters for some seasons. However, Barcelona now have a football club that is envied across the globe. Yes they have debt, but it's debt that is manageable and they are not really in any trouble. Even so, they don't really need to buy anybody. They have an academy chock full of talent.

Last night 9 players were from the Barcelona academy. The architects of the downfall of the great Mourinho and his millionaire footballers were 3 lads from the Barcelona academy. Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. Is there a better midfield in the world today? Has there ever been? Most definitely up there.

What has this got to do with Everton? Well I look at Villa and Alves, and think great players they have spent money on - but they have so much talent that was nurtured from an early age, and that is something that can be developed at any football club in the world.

Including ours. If the clubs are willing to allow it to develop. Ok top coaches are required, but they cost a damn site less than £9m we dropped on an anonymous Russian.

We have top facilities, we are proven to have been able to develop some very good young talent. Should we as a football club be pushing for this kind of system of academy bred football team. Lads who have grown up together, and become successful together. It's really not a difficult concept to understand.

Hard work, years of investment, sure, patience would be required, but I would rather see an Everton team dominate Europe in 15 years time, than a side still banging on a glass ceiling.

Shoot me down if you like, it's what I come to expect, but is it really that much to ask? It kind of depends whether or not you want success now, or sustained success later?

I know people like Goat are willing to give Moyes the rest of the century to prove himself, and if he has a plan to develop the club from the academies up, then I'll get on board with that, I really will.

What does this have to do with the rest of the post? Typical Ghost, always trying to glorify England. :P

Well I got mixed up, but it's a reference to Britain giving football to the world and then showing far too much arrogance to believe they need to keep working at grass roots level to maintain it's standing.

Much as I'd love this to happen I just can't see it. English football as a whole sucks in terms of youth development, and we're not really any better than the rest. I think England has something like 1/3 the number of top qualified coaches as Spain does. Barca reap the benefits of a youth system they invest large sums into, much more than any English side. When you think they've lost the likes of Reina and Fabregas as well it is frightening. For what it's worth I don't think our problem is that youngsters aren't given first team experience, but more that they simply aren't talented enough. You only have to look at the shambles of a national team to see that. Our coaches aren't good enough and our kids aren't good enough.

Even though all the experts are going on about it. We need a completely different FA, one that is younger than 50. It's so antiquated, even thought Sky and the Premiership were meant to completely revolutionise and modernise the game, it's not really been the case.

Would you really trust someone with a plan that said, "Look, this will take 15-20 years to work, but when it works we will be the best team in the world"?

That's what Barca did, I can't see many Evertonians buying into that.
