The Aston Villa Thread

We tried it, but he ran away to Madrid.

Unless you count Benitez.

Shame with Ancelotti, I think if we'd got him earlier in Moshiri's time, he'd have won something - and more than just a win at Anfield! Alas, Covid and sods law with timing/Real Madrid, he did 60 odd games. Think he's like 3rd for win rate as Everton manager with Mason Holgate and co.

Benitez, even without it being him/Liverpool, he was long past his own best. He'd checked out in China before us.

No coincidence Glasner who won a Europa League title, then wins an FA Cup with Palace. Emery, serial winner, has Villa on the brink of their first trophy in 30 years. What it's all about.

No surprise to me whatsoever to me that it was Emery from this list who takes them to that level.

The points about Benitez are what make me shudder whenever Mourhino's name comes up.

A perfect advocate for wanting to be "ambitious"..
New owners, and a solid managerial structure says everything.

10 years ago, we mocked tjem as they went down infront of an empty Villa Park and now theyre headed for 2nd CL qualification in 3 seasons, and favourites to win a European Pot.

And they did it seamlessly over 18 months from sacking Gerrard.

Yes im jealous, and equally frustrated.

They hit Recrution pretty much as good as you could from their spot, Yep Gerrard was a total failure but he gave Emery a cracking base to work from.
So from the player signings and removing the spanner in the works, to grabbing the right manager at the right time, they done it pretty damn good..

Couldn't give a toss about spurs being relegated. The only annoying thing is that the papers will probably link half of our squad to them as they try to work out what players they need to get them "back to wer day belong"
Another round of signings for spurs and they'll have more on the books than chelsea.

They need a clear out, but no one will buy players out for so much of the previous season. A lot now wont play at the WC. And getting prestige players in will think twice with two bottom four finishes and team places not guaranteed. Also the toxic remnants of the previous regimes.

A season of consolidation beckons. They might try and get smart and try to offer players on the books as part payment for others...
