They were just thoroughly outplayed. Other than Archer, none of the English bowlers can bowl a consistent line and length. There are far too many short and wide bad balls. With Australia you get almost none of that.

That batting wasn't good enough but the big difference is the quality of bowling. Australia are accurate and England are not close to the levels you need.

Pope's dismissal is really the only one where its a bad shot. And it's a really poor shot to be fair.

Discipline.

Discipline with bat, ball and in the field. That is all that has been required to let this england side blow itself out. Found wanting with the basics means being totally outplayed. Which is what's happened.

So another 10 year plan needs starting and maybe they can train up some proper batsmen. Forfeit the series between then and now as an act of mercy.

I think it is interesting that Stokes has been grinding it out in the past 2 tests. Has the skipper had enough of the emperors new Bazball clothes and wants a good old fashioned Ashes scrap.

It's a good job England lasted the day out, Stokes was in no condition to bowl.
Day 1 - 30c
Day 2 - 39c
Day 3 - back to 30c...allegedly
Tails may wag late into the afternoon, but they're usually rolled pretty soon next morning.
Australia can take their time
Get a lead of...well, what ever they like and if England run true to form its job and finish, shiz, shave, shower and out on the lash Friday nignt...if they still do that sort of thing.

Discipline.

One thing I would say is that it is easier to show discipline with the bat when you know the bowling will give you a short and wide one regularly that you can hit. You can play cautious against the good bowling without getting frustrated or flustered because you expect a bad ball soon.

I'm not sure Australia's batters are significantly better but they have faced a lot of bowling that hasn't been good enough.
