Another crap day I see, sooner this tour is over the better, it's been a disaster.

So Root drops Khawaja on 28 who then scores another 109 runs . Crawley gets another life off a no ball, let’s see how much he punishes the Aussies. I reckon he’ll be out in the first half hour
The batting has been woeful through the whole series, but the bowling has been far from good either. To let that Aussie line up declare on over 400 is pretty terrible. I think the days of Broad and Anderson playing together really should be over. The attack is badly missing Archer, but one player won't make a huge difference either.
the bowling has been ok, far too many dropped catches that should have been taken, but when the opposition have or are capable of much bigger scores than our batsmen, the England bowlers cant build the pressure that they need that then induces mistakes in the Aussies batsmen

Archer averages 31 (41 away from home). The guy is hugely over-rated. He had that one decent series against Australia in 2019 and has pretty much done nothing since.

Buttler is fantastic in the shorter formats but has never been and will never be a test match player. Amazed he has played as many tests as he has.

Oh yeah his white ball bowling is far better than his red, but I think he would still have helped and will bring those averages down. He's shown he can unsettle likes of Smith and that counts for something. An attack of Woakes, Robinson, Broad etc is going to be ok in English conditions but won't work in Australia or lots of other away venues. They will need to have a Wood or Archer available at all times.
The batting has been pretty terrible, and was only saved today by a partnership at 30 odd for 4. But the bowling is far from great either. They aren't good enough in any area at the minute, not even catching in the field. I think Broad was right about back to basics and focussing only on the next game. They've forgotten how to win, and you need to get back into the habit of winning. West Indies away, then home to SA and NZ are the remaining series this year. All very winnable.
I'm not sure Wood is the answer he's often touted as being either. He averages 39 against Australia. As you say, Broad and Anderson have always done best at home and it's far from clear that any of those looking to take their place are really up to the job, and the less said about the spinners the better.
The batting has been even worse though, with Burns, Pope, Crawley and Hameed getting just 205 runs between them across 18 innings at an average of 11! For four members of the top 6 to average 11 between them after 4 matches is utterly woeful, and that between all four of the sorry buzzards they have as many runs as Malan, who himself is only averaging 29 just shows how utterly awful the batsmen have been.
Incidentally, however, among the bowlers, Anderson is averaging 19, Robinson 26, Broad 28. They're okay for me and if you'd have offered most people those averages before the series you'd have taken them. Wood is 39, Stokes 71 and Leach 118 (lol), so the rest aren't so good, but it's clear that it's the batting that has massively underperformed in this series, with those four no hopers top scoring with 35 across those 18 innings. I mean ffs, even Mark Wood just scored 39!
