Root will definately be playing for England in fours years, annoys the hell out of me too that has not converting, but still comfortably our best batsmanhe's already planning for 4 years time and this side coming and winning in Aus tho...

in the the test format definitely, he needs to learn to cash in, kholi the best limited overs player, williamson possibly the best over 3 formats all together, kholi's record abroad in tests counting against him in my eyesBairstow was an aggressive goon, but Root's dismissal was unforgivable in that situation. Half volley on leg stump after pumping two consecutive boundaries. If there's an element of risk, don't hit it. 3 overs until the day's over max, you're the captain of your team, defend a good day. Absolutely gutless, I know he knows it, you could tell, but it doesn't defer from the point at all, lead by example.
There's absolute daylight between Smith and Root at the moment. Even Williamson and Kohli are leagues ahead of him.

I've always liked him, kiwi batsman like the english won't always find it so easy to boost their average as other nations with the swinging conditions, but he could yet finish above the magic 50 markThe last 2 years, especially since he had his eye surgery, Ross Taylor is in that group. He's an absolute beast, don't know exactly the figures but the last 24 months he'd be averaging in the 70s at least.
