This crap makes me so angry and sad.
A lot of talk around here about phones in class.
A lot of parents making the case for phones in class so kids can contact parents if theres a mass shooter.

Parents, at least around here, seem to have moved on from the 'gun control' discussion.
We now chat about

- armed security guards,
- police detail,
- phones in schools and how they're now necessary,
- what's the best way to approach drills with smaller kids,
- how strict should we be on kids pretending to have guns in play
- door locking and opening sequences and the kind of glass in doors

My kid can get suspended for doing finger guns in play with his friend. At pick up, some parents have AR-15 decals on their trucks.
We've to teach our kids not to do finger guns then explain why Johnnys dad has pictures of guns on his car
We're prepped for how to prep our kids for shooter drills.
There are rumors of highschools using starting pistols to desensitize kids to the sound (I've no idea how true this is, it's more the fact that parents are chatting about it)

No one's talking about active ways to reduce gun ownership. I think a lot dont want that.
They see it as their right. I don't. (unless they want to form and fight in a militia because theres no standing army)

It's the one aspect of living here that I'll never get used to.
And I'm angry at myself for having to accept it.

School shooting in Georgia. It feels like it’s been a bit since this has been on the news.
Schools have been on summer break.

I think they run the math in their head and (correctly) conclude that it probably won’t be them who is personally affected by this and as such, decide they aren’t willing to give up their toys. But the thing is, it’s always someone’s kid, or spouse, or parent who is killed in these things, and it’s completely random. This notion that somehow these deaths (particularly of school aged children) are just necessary sacrifices on the altar of freedom is disgusting and honestly the most indefensible thing about this country.

Many people here openly mock the idea of gun control and point to knife or other types of crime in the UK. Another board I post on constantly references the two guys who took down an attacker on London bridge with a narwhal tusk and a fire extinguisher. If anything, that is the very argument FOR gun control. Two brave people fought off someone with a weapon with nothing more than things they found lying around. If the attacker had been armed with a gun, they, and probably 50 other people, would have been dead before authorities got the situation under control.

I’m sure this has been linked before, but it’s worth linking again for anyone who hasn’t seen it. The right wing talking points are so tired and predictable that Jon Stewart basically knows all his answers before he gives them, and uses this guy’s own bull**** to tie him in knots.

JFC. The kid was investigated by authorities last year for making threats, and his dad bought him an AR for Christmas. Even under the best circumstances, that’s an idiotic thing to buy a 13-14 year old. Under these, it should be criminal. Apparently he’s been arrested and is facing some charges. Hopefully they stick.

Who buys their 13 year old a AR-15, nevermind letting them have access to it whenever they wanted. The Dad deserves his life sentence.

USA need to buck up their idea about gun control. Having a handgun for defense, fine. An assault rifle is not a right of any average citizen. They belong in wars.
Just no!

Guns are the issue

This really is awful

No, the culture around guns is the catalyst for the violence we're seeing because sadly we're past the point of even contemplating a ban on firearms.

But there are many, many other countries in the world where gun ownership is high, but you very rarely see such violence and the nature of it.

The whole 'mass-shooting' culture that the US has is beyond the pale.

The right often go on about governments trying to scare people whilst thinking it’s perfectly acceptable for young kids having to practice ‘active shooter’ drills in schools.

Can’t imagine how much that would freak some kids out or lead to complete distrust of people.
