The whole situation just feels so utterly hopeless. Already glanced at a local forum and it’s the same tired, idiotic arguments. People are either so misguided that they honestly, deep down, believe that the answer is MORE guns, or they’re so selfish that they think one of history’s most poorly written and confusing sentences honestly means that their right to own a firearm supersedes another human being’s right to not die in a mass shooting. Whatever it is, nothing is going to change. At least not for the better. In fact it will probably continue to get worse.

I'd love to hear from our American toffees as to their opinions on this.

I cannot believe that the vast majority believe it's as simple as the two choices you've offered up. But as an outsider looking in, it's difficult to compute alternatives. The narrative seems to be as you describe.

I've said it before, the root of the problem isn't access to guns, per se, it's the mentality/disenfranchised shooters (with almost unfettered access to guns I accept) that's the problem. It's a societal issue...and if guns were readily available in the UK, I think we'd be experiencing something similar.

I don't think it's the vast majority, nor even a majority at all. But it is enough people, who are geographically located in neatly gerrymandered areas, to give one political party reason enough to block any attempt at change and so hoover up enough votes from said areas to stay relevant - a symbiosis of tragedy.

Partly this, but also the fact that so many politicians are bought and paid for by the NRA. When the gun lobby is bankrolling your campaign year after year, you end up being more accountable to them than to your actual constituents, who as you pointed out, are largely in favor of at least some restrictions on gun ownership.

It's not that hard to own a firearm in the UK. If you want one, you can absolutely get one legally.

The difference is that in America it's still like the wild west.
The biggest problem in the 21st century is mental illness. And America has the most people suffering from mental illness. They refuse any vetting process.

This problem is only getting worse.

Guns, stupidity and weird religious/nationalist fetishes are a dangerous mix.

Mental health issues are just the cherry on top.

It truly makes me ill that I am in full agreement.
