Based on theory, multivariate models include the presence of an armed guard and control for region, school type (public, nonpublic), and grade level (high school, elementary, other); location (urban, suburban, rural); use of lockdown drills; if the attack was targeted; total number of weapons brought to the scene; number of shooters; and weapon type. Results are presented as incident rate ratios in Table 2 and show armed guards were not associated with significant reduction in rates of injuries; in fact, controlling for the aforementioned factors of location and school characteristics, the rate of deaths was 2.83 times greater in schools with an armed guard present (incidence rate ratio, 2.96; 95% CI = 1.43-6.13; P = .003).

That JAMA study's results aren't surprising (and if the presence of an armed guard is known in advance by a psychopathic shooter, they will just bring more guns/ammo with them), but it will also be unsurprising to see these right-wing gun-nuts conveniently ignore this study.

But but but 'mental health' or something. It's not as if the availability of guns makes it easier for former employees who hold grievances with their ex-employers to wreak vengeance on innocent people. A few visits to their shrink and they will be as right as rain.

When are the lawmakers ever going to wake up and smell the coffee and be brave enough to do something about this, whatever the electoral cost.

Wrong: "Guns don't kill people, people do" (that popular old response to a shooting)

Fixed: "People with guns kill people"

So, we either get rid of the guns (make them much more difficult to access) or we magically fix the people.

One goal is significantly more objective and easier to measure / make happen than the other.

Two (presumably) trained police officers injured in the shooting and some idiots want to arm untrained teachers to help deal with these situations.
Exactly. Trained, and I would guess, with body armor of some kind (that is truly a speculation, so could well be wrong) - if true, then we better start issuing that, along with weapons, to our teachers - the extra cost of providing the armor should be deducted from their pay as it's a health benefit - both in carrying the weight for fitness and potentially saving their life.....

Surely there is a tasty little market there, various levels of cover like with medicine, latest tech military spec for teacher and your kid, trade in versus next vest as your kid grows, ''nothing says love and care like the best of the best'' etc...

This issue above all others, for me, exemplifies what is so terrifying about modern politics and the world we’re leaving to our kids.

The arguments in favour of gun control are so painfully common sense, and their chance of success so absolutely nonexistent. Being “right” and “owning the libs” is more important to these sickening mutants than any shred of empathy or consideration for the hundreds of thousands of lives every year impacted by this utterly preventable problem.

Imagine packing your kid off to primary school every day, or waving your mum or dad off to work at the bank, and knowing there’s a decent chance that some maniac with a grudge will steal them from you for no reason other than they wanted 5 minutes of Facebook fame before they turned their own lights out.

I truly despair.

The arming teachers suggestion has always been one of the more stupid suggestions the gun nuts put out there to me.
I think I may have mentioned it before in this thread, but the logistics of that idea are completely unworkable (as you’d expect)

The thought that you could give 60yo Mrs. Mabel, the history teacher a handgun and expect her to go head to go head to head with a kid with a semi automatic rifle is utterly ludicrous.
Then the responding police also have to deal with another armed person on site, massive potential for misidentification there.

Are they expected to go on full tactical close quarters weapon training as well?
Most teachers take up the profession to be a part of the ‘noble profession’, to do something positive for kids and young people, not join a paramilitary organisation ffs.

The whole thing is so sickeningly selfish.
