He could have resigned his presidency. This more than anything else would have woken America up. He was a coward, loved the throwaway sound bites, but failed to do the job .... He was president, the most powerful man on the planet, yet was shown up wanting........

That would play into the hands of the republicans and the NRA. No one is going to give one jot to a principled decision like that, they would just think he is a quitter.

If one person went for the Presidency and said, I will ban all firearms if elected, I believe they would get in with a landslide. If however they lost, it would at least tell the world and indeed America that nothing will ever change........

It's a nice thought but I don't think that would happen, perhaps our merican posters can confirm but there is too many gun tooting and shooting backwater districts to allow that to happen. You could win the popular vote but still lose the election.
What can be done? A succession of presidents failed because gun control isn't even up for discussion no matter how bad it gets
Then you don't know very much about America. It's the polar opposite
Many of my neighbours wouldn't vote for that person, and that is in one of the most liberal areas of the state with the toughest gun laws in the US. The most ardent BernieBro I know has one of the biggest gun collections...
I doubt gradual change of laws is going to be enacted but at least it has a chance unlike an outright ban.

Obama eloquently tried to tell the American folk how severe the gun problem was, but even then nothing significant changed. It may even have bolstered Trump if anything.
You realise many democrats love guns too. The only difference is those democrats support laws and reform whereas their right leaning friends don't.
No American would get elected to be president if their platform was to banish firearms. That's a ridiculous suggestion.
The fact its a constitutional issue, it would be career suicide to attempt to have that as your main goal.
The president cannot single handed change the constitution, so banning them is out of question.
He or she would have to bank on its party controlling everything an even then getting the majority of them to vote his/her way.
The problem is not owning them the problem is responsibly and in part lax laws in certain states.
I would agree with that. I know folk in California whose hatred of Obama began with his talk of restricting guns and then the Governor of California Gerry Brown coming out and supporting his idea. They were under the illusion that Obama, Brown and the Dems were going to take their guns.
Some hated Obama because he was black.
Some hated him because he was not american. (sarcasm)
Some hated him because he was simply a democrat
and like i mentioned above then there was those who started to resent him and the democrats even more when they mistakenly thought hew was going to take their guns because breitbart and fox news spoon fed them telling them that was the case as did the NRA.
