Republicans Just Killed Obama’s Rule Blocking Mentally Ill From Owning Guns

The nihilistic orgy of regulation-repeal is continuing unabated in the Republican-strangled House of Representatives. Today’s target is an Obama administration regulation that would prevent Social Security recipients with mental disabilities from owning firearms.

On behest of their masters at the National Rifle Association, the appallingly irresponsible House voted 235-180 to repeal the measure. “The Obama administration’s last minute, back-door gun grab would have stripped law-abiding Americans of their Second Amendment rights without due process,” complained NRA lobbyist Chris Cox.

Some of the worst shooting massacres in American history have been committed by mentally ill perpetrators. The man who attacked a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and injuring 70, plead not guilty by reason of insanity; the Virginia Tech shooter, who slaughtered 32 and injured 17, had been previously declared mentally ill by a Virginia special justice. The murdered who butchered 27 at Sandy Hook Elementary also had serious mental issues.

The rule affects “an estimated 75,000 beneficiaries who require a representative to manage their benefits because of a disabling mental disorder,” according to FOX News.

So far, 1,383 Americans have died from gun violence this year, and 2,677 have been injured, according to watchdog GunViolenceArchive.org.

House Republicans this week have repealed regulations preventing coal corporations from dumping waste into rivers and streams and allowed fossil fuel companies to conceal foreign donations. They are set to repeal the Interior Department’s standards on methane emissions – an extremely damaging greenhouse gas – tomorrow.

“I don’t want to keep saying the same thing over and over. But one of the things we’ve noticed: There are mental health issues here. We’re really serious about our mental health legislation” said House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) in December 2015 after the shootings in Colorado Springs and San Bernadino.

But once again, the Republican Party has proven to be a morally vacant carnival of ideologically fluid flip-floppers who will say whatever they want and then do the exact opposite without a trace of remorse or shame.

Utah 14-year-old girl shot in head for '$55 and an iPod'

A teenage girl found shot in the back of the head in the US state of Utah was targeted for her valuables and $55 (£44) in cash, authorities say.

Deserae Turner, 14, was discovered clinging to life in a dry canal last Friday by friends of her family after a six-hour search of Smithfield.

Two 16-year-old boys were arrested over the weekend and have been charged with attempted murder.

One of the teens allegedly told police the crime was motivated by "greed".

Police say the two teens - who have not been identified - lured Deserae to a dry canal bed near the Sky View High School in Smithfield under the guise of selling her a knife.

But instead, the boys had planned to kill her and take her money, iPod and mobile phone, according to the charges.

The ninth grader is in a medically induced coma at a Salt Lake City area hospital, and is "in the fight of her life", a family spokesman said.

In a prepared statement the family wrote: "We know that our Father in Heaven is watching over her, and all of us have been touched by her.

"We know that He hears and answers prayers, and we can see His hand at work as Deserae continues to make progress."

Deserae was found early Friday morning by friends who had tracked her location using her mobile phone information, which authorities provided.

The case has unnerved the small community.

"This has kind of shaken up our citizens," Chief of Police Travis Allen told reporters after the charges were revealed.

"We haven't seen things like this before."

He said many of the girl's possessions were found with the two boys.

Police were advised that the original plan was to murder [the girl] using knives," Cache County Attorney James Swink wrote in charging documents.

But one of the teens also carried a .22-calibre revolver as a "secondary weapon," if the original plan failed, Mr Swink charged.

After the boys were arrested, the alleged gunman told them where to find the gun, and the shell casing - which the other boy had taken to keep "as a memento".

He also penned a letter to the girl's family in which he wrote that he is "so, so, so sorry", authorities say.

The police later found the shell "displayed" on the boy's window sill.

Investigators also say they found shoe prints in the soil that match the Nike and Vans sneakers worn by the two boys.

"I haven't seen anything like this case in the 18 years I've worked in Cache County," the prosecutor said at Tuesday's news conference.

Cos yeah, letting mentally ill people be allowed to carry firearms doesn't have any downsides does it?

Even confessed gun nuts must see why this is bad idea surely?

I suppose they'd just reply with "There's no problem letting someone with mental health issues have a gun, because if they try anything I'll just shoot em with my gun!"

Disgusting, both initial killing and then this ruling.

I've tried for years to get my head around why either of these people should be armed, especially the private citizen.
If you arm yourself every time there's a loud nock on the door, you're going to get in to trouble at some stage.
If someone is causing trouble outside your house and not identifying themselves, keep the door shut and call the cops.

MADISON — Concealed firearms could be legally carried without a license in Wisconsin under a far-reaching, Republican-backed proposal unveiled Tuesday.

The bill would also allow licensed concealed carry permit holders to bring firearms into places where they are currently barred, including school buildings, unless signs are posted prohibiting them.

“We’re just removing the barrier of the concealed carry permit to give them their constitutional right,” said the bill’s co-sponsor, Republican Rep. Mary Felzkowski of Irma. She and Sen. Dave Craig, a Republican from Big Bend, began circulating the measure on Tuesday for co-sponsors.

State law requires anyone carrying a concealed weapon to obtain a license and take a training course. The proposed bill would do away with the license requirement for someone who wanted to carry a hidden weapon.

In schools that permit carrying concealed weapons, the bill would allow only license holders to legally bring them onto the grounds or into buildings. But they could carry the weapons under a newly created permit that does not require any firearm training. And they could leave firearms in their cars while picking up or dropping off students.

Under current law, illegally bringing a weapon onto school grounds is a felony punishable by up to 3½ years in prison.

Past attempts to allow guns on school grounds have been met with bipartisan opposition in the Legislature, as well as from the law enforcement community and school officials.

The measure drew immediate opposition from Republican state Sen. Luther Olsen, who said he objected to letting guns on school grounds and removing requirements for taking firearm safety classes.

“I don’t know what its chances are,” Olsen said of the bill in the Legislature that has its highest Republican majorities in decades. “It depends on the day in this place.”

Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said he was “generally supportive” of the bill, but also hedged his bets on whether it will pass saying he would “monitor public support as we determine our next steps.”

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling said it was “completely irresponsible” to allow people to carry concealed weapons without obtaining a permit.

The so-called “right to carry” bill comes six years after Wisconsin legalized concealed weapons. More than 300,000 people have active licenses.

The new measure, championed by Second Amendment gun rights advocates, would make Wisconsin the 13th state to allow gun owners to carry concealed weapons without a permit, according to the National Rifle Association. North Dakota became the most recent state to enact such a law, sometimes referred to as “constitutional carry,” last week.

Scott Rausch, a spokesman for the NRA, called it a common sense proposal that would allow anyone who can legally possess a firearm to do so without having to “jump through government hoops and pay fees to exercise a basic constitutional right in the way that works best for them.”

The Wisconsin proposal would create a three-tiered system for carrying hidden weapons. The current concealed weapon permit, which requires users to go through training on how to use a firearm, would remain and would be an option for people who need it to carry their weapons into certain other states.

A new basic permit would be created that does not require any firearm training, but that could be used to carry a concealed weapon onto school grounds in Wisconsin that don’t prohibit it. Both licenses would cost the same — $40 — which includes $10 for a background check.

The bill would also legalize the carrying of Tasers, which are sometimes used by police to electrically shock someone into submission.

Craig said it’s all about freedom and removing what he called “bureaucratic red tape” of getting a concealed carry license and doing away with the financial burden of paying for the training requirement.

If this was a law passed by Obama on his way out then it smacks of political opportunism by Obama. He had 8 years to introduce this law and let it bed in. Why did it only become important on his way out......
