Either he knows he faces criminal charges once he is out of the White House or he desperately needs the money from all those morons donating.

I was referring to the courts and Congress not letting him get away with it. Too much unrest would follow (violent protests, union strikes, economic unrest, etc)
But the Republican senators are really pushing me to start to doubt that theory

TBF this isnt strictly speaking true - they do care (deeply) about the country, it’s just they don’t consider “the Libs” / “the left” / the coastal elites or however as being part of that country. They are the other, the traitorous elements etc. and this is something that politicians, ministers and so on have stoked for decades.

It’s a more up to date version of the same belief that many in the South held / hold, who managed to be both genuinely God-fearing Christian people as well as owning slaves (and later maltreating African-Americans) for the simple reason that they didn’t recognise them as people (or at its most benign now “part of our community”)
