Good point. I'd rather live under an authoritarian regime than allow people to disturb my dinner out.

Greatest country in the world to be a citizen. When I went back home to Ireland/UK for a holiday last year, I realized how everyone is getting taxed to kingdom come, no matter if you live In the north or south of Ireland, regardless of political affiliation. Liverpool seemed a little cheaper but still expensive compared to the east coast.

Still the land of opportunity for people who obey the laws, work hard to better their family/situation, and are good to their neighbors. I hope a bunch of Yobs don’t surround your dinner table and threaten and intimidate you when you are a pensioner

dunno about that. I earn roughly the same as I did in the south of Ireland
the tax on my income was slightly higher in Ireland but not much.
but here I pay $5k in property tax, I pay a water bill, I pay a sewer bill And god knows what other stealth taxes.
in Ireland I paid 100 euro property tax with no water or sewer bills.
then I have to buy health insurance by law. That’s another 12k for a family of 3.
Add to that that in Ireland my taxes paid for my Health care and my third level education.
here 50% of my federal tax is spent on the military.
I love living here but the tax and return on your tax dollar thing is a myth.

edit. It might be the land of opportunity due to the vast market size but it’s certainly not the land of equal opportunity. All well and good telling someone to pull themselves up by the bootstraps but what if they don’t have any boots?

Very good breakdown to be fair. That is expensive for healthcare, which we all need. Does your employer not subsidize or help with coverage, however you may be self employed and I see where you are coming from. Ireland is always home to me no matter what, however I know I will be here for the rest of my life.

Yea, same here.
my wife’s a contractor and I work in the start up world. So no healthcare. I guess the theory is that you make enough to buy your own but we don’t get the benefits of pooled discounts. We’re also taxed on all our income, no deduction for healthcare. (Except a HSA card).
anyways it seems straight forward to me to tax the bejesus out of Jeff Besos and use the revenue to give everyone a fair crack at opportunity.
oh and stop bribing people to join the military by offering reasonable social services to only them.

Oddly enough, doesn't happen in Ireland. Other things that don't happen here include mass shootings in schools, police blasting unarmed people to kingdom come, mass protests, federal agents teargassing crowds of disaffected people, you know, things like that. America pays for their "opportunity", you're just one of the lucky ones that doesn't see the tax

...and don’t EVER get sick.

Probably the worst thing about this country to be honest. You can do everything else right, yet at any moment you happen to get dealt a bad hand on the medical front, there’s a good chance you’re going to be brought to your knees financially.

Yep Ireland is perfect. Just don’t fall behind on the mortgage or you will have a bunch of ex loyalist bailiffs physically removing you from your home, while the Garda look on in behalf of the banking institution.

Harks back to the 1800s when the “landlords” were evicting families from their land and tearing their bungalows down. I see the tax everytime I look at my paycheck and it is amazing how many people inIreland (myself included) still feel the need to leave the Emerald Isle and head here or to Australia for a chance to make a decent wage. All a matter of perspective. The healthcare system here is not great though and tough for working people who dont qualify for Medicaid and pay for private insurance. However you can get an appointment to see a specialist very quickly which is important in this day and age.

Good point. Definitely tough for the self employed and people who work jobs that don’t provide good medical benefits

Yeah no, falling behind on a mortgage and getting evicted defo doesn't happen in America and is most certainly the same as mass shootings, police indiscriminately murdering unarmed civilians, teargassing, systemic racism and kids getting shot to pieces in schools for decades with not a single bit of legislation to try and curb it. Man, never realised how messed up Ireland was with the evictions and the stuff

Ok good enough lad. If I looked out the window and told you the sun was shining, you would look out the same window and tell me it was pissing out of the heavens.

Good luck to you anyway and I enjoy the posts.
