Cheers Roydo. Thought it was really interesting. Loved this line: "The then practically unknown Frank McAvennie had joined the Hammers in the summer from St Mirren, and set about First Division defences with the sort of relish he would later reserve for Special Powder, booze, women and Special Powder". Hahahahaha.

Was a lad was Frank, thats for sure! I live miles from Liverpool, and played myself, so only saw them live at the Cup Final, when I got a ticket from an official in the local FA. Hardly any TV games neither. From memory, all the goals were in front of the RS end, and with me right at the back of our end, hardly saw them!

I did get my match ticket signed by John Hurt though, who is a Blue.

I'm shocked to learn there were no games on TV until January that year.

That season was heartbreaking to be honest .

I never really took to lineker to be honest and looking at his goals might surprise newer blues , he was a goal scoring machine but we became so reliant on him . A midfield that were regularly in double figures where reduced to providers for him and if he didn't score we often didn't .

We didnt have many live games anyrate back then. Cup Finals, England games, but I cant recall live league games. There were certainly no "Super Sundays" or Monday Night Football; at least I dont think so. Reckon you just had MOTD, and ITV had a Sunday afternoon highlights package as well. Sure someone will correct me if my recollection is wrong though!

Same over here. 1 or 2 live games a week on national TV for our national sports. We moved when I was a kid so the teams I supported I hardly ever got to see because if you didn't live in that city, they weren't on television very often. It's weird to think of now, but I followed them through the papers. Yet my devotion was absolute. Weird to think of now.

The next season when we won the league , I might be wrong but my recollection is there was no telly coverage at all and all we got was 5 mins on the local news although I'm surprised the presenters had the time between the assorted sexual assaults .

What was the normal first choice starting 11 that year?

Southall (injury for Wales probably cost us )
Shagger
Van den Hauwe niño pointon covering made his debut beating arsenal 6-1 and am I mad but did pat cover centre half ?
Ratters
mountfield although I think he was injured a while wasn't he ?
Bracewell
Reid
Tricky
Sheedy
Lineker
Sharp/ Heath fighting for the place next to lineker

Ian Marshall & wilkinson were perennial subs as well I think

So you're saying Everton were the best team in the league, and were arguably the best team in England, maybe Europe over 3 seasons and they never featured on TV at all that year? Mind boggling.

I can remember having come back from Norwich which I think took most of a day on that old bone shaker train that stopped everywhere and I'm sure there was just no coverage , I can remember something on Granada reports .

Thats right! Down here near Bristol we couldnt get local BBC nor HTV, so had to watch BBC/HTV Wales. So well in on the Welsh clubs, and Rugby, but nothing other than that! Took Sky for 24 hours on Sunday; 2 PL games, Championship play off, 2 Spanish games. Amazing when you look back!
