It’s generally accepted, especially within the city, that Benitez is a professional and a good bloke. He’s taken decisions to be closer to his family who settled here that have certainly damaged his career, Newcastle being one.

He’s a very good manager. I’d welcome him here. For every red that would giggle that we’ve got their “cast-off”, there would be plenty more who would raise an eyebrow at Benitez coming here

After all, he’s popular there because he’s a very good manager and steered the club through a difficult period with their owners who took them to the brink.

I’ve spoke to quite a few reds who have said they believed he’d do a good job with us and straighten out the mess we’re in.
He steered himself out of a job at Liverpool. There’s quite a bit of revisionism about the end of his time there.

He had a very public falling out with owners who were warring with each other, all wasn’t well at the club and they very nearly went into administration. It can’t have been easy for a top manager working in those circumstances, I’m not sure many could have done much better.

Yes, but there was sourness on the field too. His signing of Aquilani was heavily criticized and it generally all went pear-shaped.

Funny that as a while ago I spoke to a respected broad sheet sports journalist who is a neighbour of mine ( @Connor knows who he is ) who said and I quote - “he’s a power mad ego maniac, who surrounds himself with “ yes men “ and tries to take over the club from within “ - he met his match with Ashley

Benitez had him threatened over printing the same ( never proved ) but why would two large fellas approach him and warn him about printing anything further )

I’d believe him over a few lads in a pub.

How many managers have fell out with Mike Ashley? What do the Newcastle fans think of him?

How many owners has Benitez fell out with? What do the fans think of him at clubs he’s been to?
