I don't know Mertens at all as a player really. But if they're pretty close in ability, and the main difference is Mertens wants to play for us while Mirallas isn't fussed, I'd rather Mertens.

Signing Mertens might convince Mirallas to stay, as this might tip us to get a good cup run or league. If Mirallas goes then he is an ideal cover however he is unfortunately older

Anyone reckon the club may have done there little trick of bogus enquiries that will never happen and leaking stuff to the press when it comes to we are after big names.
After some bad publicity to the board thelast few weeks if we don't end up getting a playmaker or a number 10 then the board can say 'we were looking at this and that player but we couldn't get them over the finish line' its fantastic ambition getting linked with the likes of Shaqiri & Mertens but wether they are genuine is a bigger question.

Hopefully it's more because Mirallas is leaving and we're getting a load of TV money. The whole league is strengthening.
