We haven’t been able to handle pressing tactics for 5-6 years. And it’s gotten a lot worse in the last 3. Lacking pace to break the press is a huge disadvantage. The Alcaraz to Beto outlet helped last Spring, but it’s still a concern.
NDiaye, KDH, Gana, and Grealish all made us look a little better in that regard on Sunday. Long may it continue.
Technical ability and tactical competence amongst your back 6 are more important than pace if you want to beat the press by playing out from the back. Need to be able to play one and two touch passes calmly under pressure, with a clear structure of who goes where and when to create overloads. We haven't really had the personnel to look after the ball nor had the managers to put them in a system that does it.
As a result we have tended to hoof the channels or to no.9, missing out the press altogether.
Not sure I can see that changing any time soon as not sure it is strictly within
Moyes' nature and I still hold doubts over the likes of Pickford,
Tarkowski, O Brien and
Mykolenko to play that high risk passing game in our own third.
Once we get territory up the pitch it's a different story
