Jep, they are not easy to negotiate with. However, release clauses are always mandatory in any case. Asking price is around 30-35m. I know from local sources here in Basque that there are talks between Everton and Sociedad, but also other clubs being interested in Kubo, but I can't tell how far the process is.
Do you mean non mandatory?
 
I understand the main targets take time to pull off with financial demands and other clubs' interest but I'm surprised we haven't at least brought in a free agent to fill some of the gaps in the mean time
We were in for Tete tbf but obviously got gazumped, other than him not sure what frees we would 100% want.

Think maybe they're waiting to see what loans become available/feasible towards the end of the window.

Free agents also waiting to see what offers come in. It’s not wise to take the first offer unless it’s simply great.

It's obligatory to set release clause for a player (often much higher than an actual transfer value) in La Liga mainly due to the Spanish law as footballers are by law the same as workers with a contract that can buy themselves out of a contract. :)
