McGinn is a decent-to-great (on his day) player who will bring needed creativity, but it does sound a bit uninspiring. Still though, we'll need a squad to compete and he's a great addition with that in mind, HOWEVER it will likely push Garner down the pecking order - we'll have no defensive mids other than Gueye and I'm not 100% on how Garner will do in that position.

"Experience" is also needed is what I mean.

If it's true that he's after a Premer League return and it's only us, Fulham and United with offers, maybe he'll cut his cloth accordingly?

Moreover, he did leave City to play for Villa under Dean Smith! Villa had no Europe then. I wouldn't rule us out as an option.

Don't forget Brazil aspirations in a World Cup year and our Ancelotti ties.

I do think it's slightly naive, but I don't mean that as a criticism just a comment. I've heard all this 'things are different this time' stuff far too many times to just swallow it uncritically. I'll judge this set up on what it does not what it says or how it feels. So far I don't think the signs have been hugely encouraging if i'm honest, but i'm well aware that it's early days and things can change quickly.

I think you're right - nobody should swallow any rhetoric that comes out of the club, regardless who is in charge.

What I would say though is that there's a fair few variables on this window that I don't think people are really accepting the context of.

1) We do have a new team of people in charge, yes, but they've mostly been here 5 minutes and some of them are still on gardening leave
2) The fact we have a new regime in place could well mean that previous targets that we've done background work on under the last regime are now a thing of the past and we've had to start again - I've said before that actually signing a player is usually a really lengthy process that goes on for weeks (or months in some cases) because of the web of complex legal agreements that exist.
3) We are in a fairly unprecedented period (by Everton standards) in terms of the number of players we need to bring in this summer. It's a bit like a jigsaw - let's say we need 10 players for the sake of argument and we have (again, for the sake of argument) £100m to spend - you can't go and sign three players for that £100m and then hope to fill the squad out with frees and loans - that adds huge risk. You need to tee a lot of it up beforehand so you can make the educated decisions where to spend the money.

I would expect that we'll go right to the end of the window on some deals - there's still 7-8 weeks left of it. Yes, seeing players coming in sooner rather than later would be good, but it's probably unrealistic given the above that we'd see a huge amount of movement in the early part of the window.

But the main point you're absolutely on the money about is about being uncritical. Actions most definitely speak louder than words - I think there's clearly a "plan" that's coming to fruition on the leadership structure of the club, which is great to see, but that in itself has a knock-on effect to the pace of change in terms of players coming and going and that's the part we are all going to focus on, which makes me want to temper my own expectations about what we are seeing this window.

Ive never watched McGinn and thought theres creativity.
He's a grafter with a good attitude. But creative player is not a box id tick with him.

Decent enough at it and his assist (and goal) numbers don't lie. I know he also takes free kicks and all that but at this point are we going to ignore a goal threat?

I respectfully disagree, it takes Everton longer than any other club to complete deals, it always has.... Forest accepted a bid from Newcastle for Elanga, let`s see how long it takes to complete. IMO they will complete that before we complete Barry despite us agreeing a fee days ago.

That was their second or third bid for Elanga.

We got the club-to-club negotiations dusted quickly, and we gave a lad who has just played an international tournament time to enjoy his holiday because we're sound.
